Yeah, and from a child's perspective, it sort of made me appreciate that my mother's guilt trips were just about the worst thing she could dish out.
(And I guess it goes without saying, but it's really horrible that the kid was having sex with the mom's boyfriend -- and the mom blamed the kid. People like that need a big thump in the head. Or maybe a head piercing.)
It's also horrible that the paper reported the sex as if it was the daughter's fault. "She was being sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend" somehow didn't have the same oomph, or what?

I think the intent of the paper was to report the mother's excuse. "She was being sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend" wouldn't have made any sense in that context or at that point in the article. Yes, that's what happened and yes that was horrible, but I think the point of writing it the way they did was to show how twisted the mother's thinking was. On the other hand, no matter what their intent was, I agree that they did a poor job of it.

I don't think it even did that, though. It was presented as a journalistic fact, not really as the mother's opinion.
I don't know. I've read so many articles written by people who seem allergic to the term "sexual abuse," and I think the overall effect (though maybe not the intent) is to normalize something that really shouldn't be normalized.
