Holy Crap, See This Movie! I do not know everyone's situation here, but →[More:]I have not heard much about anyone's loved ones in Iraq or Afghanistan. This movie really communicates, I think, some aspects of what it is like for families who have been sucked up in W's little adventure.

I never saw Crash, and I think that, as a few days go by, I will find a bit more heavy-handedness in this movie, esp. the very end scene, but GOSH, I just sat and stared at the screen through the credits, and then found it hard to get up.

There were only like 6 people in the theater, and I had not heard much about it. Just a great movie, though. Great cast.

Well, where I live, I am surrounded with people who have loved ones in those places. Plus my son will eventually wind up in Iraq.

I don't need a movie. It's probably well made and all that, but...

I have one (work) acquaintance who did a tour in Afghanistan. That is it.

My point was that MOST people in the US have very little connection to this war.

I hope that your son somehow avoids, it, BF.

Oh, I meant to mention that, danf. You are right.

It's easy for me to forget that what is common knowledge and daily bread for us here near Bragg is not so in so much of the country.

As to son, as I mentioned in an earlier thread, his job assignment after USAFA will be in Security Forces. So I can't see him not being deployed at some point. But he'll be at Air Force bases, which (probably illogically) makes me feel better.

One of MuddDude's best friends is stationed in a not-so-nice part of Iraq right now (is there any "nice" place in Iraq?) - I'm certainly planning on Netflixing this movie.

I think the thing that pisses me off the most is that very few Americans are making any commensurate sacrifices for this war. We're not paying a war tax. We're not cutting back on our use of oil. We're not knitting war socks. Most of the time, we don't even think about the fact that we're at war.

Ugh, Haggis again? Issues movies rarely do anything for me. Even when I agree with them, I feel manipulated. Platoon was a good one, but no others are springing to mind. Crash and Million Dollar Baby were soap opera and movie of the week pap. I have to wonder if Haggis can ever put his past in television melodrama behind him.

Why should we? The only benefit to the American people is, arguably, another decade or so of our economy being falsely propped up by ensuring that oil is purchased with dollars rather than rubles or euros. Other than that, it sucks to be a soldier, I'm sure, but they knew what they were getting into, so why should I be heading off to get my butter ration stamps and some war bonds?

We (and I don't meen you, specifically, but the United States in general) started this war. We are continuing this war. The least we could do is recognize that we're AT war. If we're not buying war bonds, then we should be marching in the streets. We should be impeaching the ones who started this thing (and I don't just mean GWB).

At the very least, people need to pay attention.

Here, we have no choice. It affects our economy, it affects our social lives, it affects how we feel when we pick up the paper and see that we lost another person from Bragg and pray we don't know them.

As has been said elsewhere, the rest of America is at the mall.
