Is the name Dove male or female? I have a job interview with someone named Dove next week. [More:]I have never heard of this name. Do you think I should be looking for a male or female? Obviously, we've only corresponded via e-mail.
I would play it cool. Walk in and say you're meeting with Dove Whoever. See if the person says, Oh, let me get HIM or Let me get HER.

Well, Dov is a Hebrew male name. But I would guess that Dove with an "e" is probably female. Have you tried googling the full name for clues?

It's a bird. Or some soap.

Female, in my experience. Pronounced do-vay. But it might just be after the bird in this case. I've also known a Dovey - she was named after a character in Ruth Park's brilliant YA novel Playing Beatie Bow (short for Dorcas).

Well, Dov is a Hebrew male name.

Doviva is the female equivalent, I'm pretty sure.

I tried googling the full name, and I just got a junk listing on a "business directory" site. I probably will just go with the flow. In e-mail, I just used the first name, e.g. "Dear Dove:"

mullacc, this would be a lot easier if the person's name were Ivory.

This baby name site votes "female."

I always thought Boraxo would be a hell of a first name.

It might be a Hebrew version of David (pronounced Dah-veed) too.

I knew a guy named Dove, pronounced like the bird. 'Course he was a musician.

Well, we've gone from not knowing the gender to not even knowing the pronunciation. Good luck on the interview!

I think a phone call may be in order.

I knew a guy named Dove, too, but it was in Israel, and he chose to transliterate his name with the extra "e," since he was a decorated war veteran and loved the irony.

I know a guy named Dov. In his case, it's short for David.
