In Memoriam -- ten years ago today John Denver died after the experimental aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove.
My neighbor, a retired doctor, told me how his colleague reached into the rear seat of his plane to put a blanket on his daughter and switched off the engine somehow. They walked away from a mountain landing but the plane was demolished.
I guess John Denver became sort of a joke for a lot of people but I miss that sense of idealism.
A scene from Oh God! was filmed near my house (back in the days when this was something exciting rather than being pissed at the neighbors who constantly disrupt the street because they can't live within their means).
I remember seeing a documentary about Karen Carpenter a while ago which showed part of an interview with John Denver, who'd been a friend of both Carpenters. He broke down in tears and said that everyone knew Karen was dying but nobody knew what to do to help her - her anorexia was never mentioned, it was a taboo subject. He said he wished he'd been a better friend to her and had had the courage to say to her family, look, you've really got to do something to save her life.
Also John Denver was the first person I ever saw play a 12-string guitar. I was fascinated by it when I saw him on TV with this guitar that made such a jangly sound.
