OMG Snake! [More:]This monster was spotted by one of the kids, slithering its way into our shed (which we are living in while house building). It disappeared in amongst the stacked-up belongings in an area we have set aside for storing all the stuff we aren't currently using, so it had about 5,65412 places to hide in.

Not knowing what sort of snake it was, but suspecting a brown snake, I decided not to seek it out myself, but to call in the experts. That turned out to be a good decision, as it was an Eastern Brown Snake, the second most venomous land snake in the world, second only to the Inland Taipan. The snake catcher said that a single drop of venom is enough to kill 16 healthy adults and that the snake can strike up to 12 times in a two-second period. It was also full of eggs and close to giving birth to 10-40 more of them.

Holy shit. Good thing your eagle-eyed kid noticed it.

Why isn't he wearing special gear? Yikes.

Whoa. Snakes on a shed.

Did you have to pay the snake catcher?

Mental note: do not move to Australia. Do not move, do not move, do not move to Australia, because if the mice don't get you then the snakes will.

Yeah, even more lucky that we were there to stop the child's natural inclination to try and pick it up to play with! The only special gear these guys wear is thick leather boots to protect their feet. We had to pay him $70, but would have gladly paid way more. He took the snake away and will release it after it hatches its babies (he sells captive-bred snakes as pets).

We had had a problem with mice when we first moved here - now we know why the problem suddenly went away ;-)

I saw three snakes during my two weeks in Texas. My god, I'm glad to be back in California.

(And I didn't click on your link, dg. Thank you SO much for properly labeling it.)

I've now got the willies so bad that my arms and legs keep getting all wiggly.

No Australia for me, man. Everything can kill you there and the koalas have STDs.
