I will just never get the whole Germany/Hasselhoff connection. It's so random & weird.

Celebrity is a weird thing. It probably came about because he had a single do well there when he was still on TV every day. Never underestimate the power of Baywatch.

Re: the DH/Deutschland connection:

DH played a doctor on The Young & the Restless back in the 70's, which led to his role as Simon in Starcrash, (the Italian Star Wars).

During his Knight Rider stint, he cut some records and toured overseas, at a time preceding the popularity of karaoke, American Idol, and open mic sports bars. His only real competition outside the U.S. at the time were Menudo and maybe the Solid Gold dancers.
