Ask Mecha: I'm looking for recommendations for songs for a mix tape. The twist. It's for playing at the birthday party of a six year old girl. Any ideas?
(* awaits jonmc recommendations with anticipation *) :-)

I'd say "ABC" by the Jackson 5. It's catchy and simple.

Background: She likes crazy frog and Beyonce. I know...

My Boy Lollipop by Millie. A great song that's easy for kids to sing along to.

And yes, I know it's about fellatio, but hopefully six-year-olds won't make that connection.

Pains me to say this, but...I agree with chuckdarwin: Robot Parade by TMBG is a great song and perfect for kids.

Am I too late?
My niece loves “Magic Dance” by David Bowie (from Labyrinth). Also, there’s a lot of recent stuff that’s really upbeat and catchy – ‘1234’ by Feist might work, ‘Dashboard’ by Modest Mouse or ‘Here It Goes’ by Ok Go are pretty fun.

I second Spice Girls, it’s been a few years since I worked with kids, but back in the day my 6-7 yr olds loved Spice Girls and “Wannabe” sparked more than one dance party. Of course, that was also at the height of their popularity, I’m not sure what would be analogous to Spice Girls and Hanson today, but a friend just told me that her kids love all things Disney, like High School Musical or Hannah Montana. She also recommends “Nicest Kids in Town” from the Hairspray soundtrack.

Ignoring "new", I'm just going with the catchy here:
The Go Team - Ladyflash
The Archies - Sugar Sugar
Adam & the Ants - Ant Rap
Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?
Biz Markie - Just a Friend (he says "bra" and talks about tongue kissing, though)
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy
The Tammys - Egyptian Shumba
Hall and Oates - Can't Go For That
Heart - Barracuda
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
The Kinks - Ape Man
MIA - Galang
Michael Jackson - Rock With You
The Monkees - Daydream Believer
Paul McCartney & Wings - Silly Love Songs
The Ramones - Blitzkreig Bop
Squeeze - Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)
Stereo Total - C'est la Mort
Sweet - The Ballroom Blitz
ABBA - Dancing Queen
Slayer - Raining Blood

on preview, I guess I'm too late, but screw it. Let me know if you "need" any of these.

chuckdarwin's got some great suggestions. I would also suggest putting on something by Madness. In my experience, Kids. Love. Madness. "Our House" would be great, but also "Baggy Trousers," "Night Boat to Cairo," maybe "It Must Be Love," etc. ("House of Fun" is also great, but contains thinly veiled references to buying condoms, so you may want to avoid that -- if nothing else than to sidestep the eyebrow-raising among the adults who get the lyrics.)

My sister's kids for some reason all go ape for the Stones' "Under My Thumb," but you may want to eschew that on the basis of misogyny. ;)

My best friend's 5-year-old son also LOVES "Shout to the Top" by the Style Council. (No, I haven't been trying to indoctrinate him, I swear!)

On preview: YES to Adam and the Ants! Though I'd suggest "Antmusic," myself.

Ha! I told you. First it was fake titties and now it's TMBG.

McDonalds, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut

I just heard this on Never Mind The Buzzcocks just now. TRAVESTY! DEATH! MURDER!

The fact they're German is no excuse. They must all die.

(I've found a new Worst Song Ever - I'm just glad I didn't live here when it was on the radio/telly)

Just a Kid by Wilco and SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy from the SpongeBob movie soundtrack are perfect. Ocean Man by Ween is also on that album.

And don't overlook TMBG's non-kid oriented material. Istanbul Not Constantinople and Birdhouse in Your Soul leap to mind.

Plus the Hives. Babies love the Hives. Maybe Hate to Say I Told You So.

Anything by the B-52's and Talking Heads' "Stay up Late".

chuckdarwin - bad song but kids love it.

And you're WRONG! The worst "song" ever is the crazy frog. Remember when every third person had that as a ringtone?
