Why have people started using myspace as their main "email?" [More:]I got a bulk email from someone I know who is moving saying that they're not going to be using their email address anymore, and that if we want to contact them we should do it through their myspace account... Why have people started doing this (this isn't the first person I know who has)?

It would be like saying, I'm buying a phone, but you have to have AT&T to call me.

I'm waiting for someone to invent a gadget that lets you send "email" to people's myspace accounts without having a myspace account yourself.

MySpace would never allow it. Someone invented a site awhile back that would monitor someone's relationship status and e-mail you if it changed; MySpace shut it down.

I hate MySpace. The majority of pages I've seen are totally unreadable and hurt my eyes.

*shakes fist at MySpace and tells it to get off my lawn*

I don't get it. Don't they still need an email address?

Yea, I can't imagine you could get by without having an e-mail address.... but maybe that's a sign that my life is far too wrapped up in technology. After all, our forefathers survived, somehow.

I know an unfortunate amount of people who only use their myspace or facebook accounts to communicate with each other. It seems to be a trend among those who aren't too computer savvy.

Five years from now, you're going to have two choices: you can "get on the facebook" or "get on the myspace." There will be no "Internet."

I'm hoping I'll still be able to stay in the neutral lands of Google Reader.

I find Facebook such a wonderful way to keep up with friends and family, but I do still have regular email. One person I reconnected with on Facebook wouldn't let him send me an email because it was too long (though it was no longer than our usual emails) so we moved our correspondence to regular email, and another friend had her account disabled because she was too active (shudders at the thought).

My beef is with MySpace users that put so much crap on their spaces it takes forever and a day to load and does weird things to my computer. I have top of the line DSL so it isn't THAT.

I think your quotes should be around "people".

Orkut is evolving into some sort of social networking site aggregator which will allow you to see your mypace and facebook stuff all on one page...

*Cough* Sometime in the last couple of weeks I realized that pretty much everyone I know IRL is now on Facebook. Sometime a little later than that, I realized that my electronic communications with them were all taking place on Facebook instead of email. It's the ease of it, really. I'm not going to abandon email any time soon, of course, but for checking in with (or making plans with) my friends, it's very very useful.

If a friend demanded communication through myspace or facebook only I doubt I'd stay in contact. The only way "ease of use" is valid at all is if everyone you know is on the same social network. Otherwise email is much easier and efficient.

Because they clearly don't want me to contact them ever again. I check my MySpace account maybe once a month.
