Nuclear attack sequence from the 1986 animated film When the Wind Blows.[More:]I watched this for the first time last night, and I thought it was very effective (and affecting). It would make a great double feature with Grave of the Fireflies (scene), if you really wanted to bum yourself out.
I saw When The Wind Blows in 1989 or 90, I think. I remember thinking it was really great, even though it gave me such a sick feeling.

There's an anime movie called Barefoot Gen, which is an autobiographical account of a kid who lived in Hiroshima when it was bombed, that is also brilliant and powerful, but incredibly hard to watch.

I remember the feeling in England in the early 80s when Thatcher and Reagan were in each other's pockets and cruise missiles were at Greenham Common. There was this unease that a nuclear war could happen at any time with those two nutters in charge of the button. I remember reading the book of When The Wind Blows and thinking, yes, this is exactly how it'll be when it happens.

When the Wind Blows is wonderful, and the single saddest animated movie I have ever seen.
