I just purchased a solid-state hard drive for my desktop PC A 16 gigabyte Solid State IDE drive for like $200 on newegg. Craziness. It seems like just a couple years ago the very idea of that sort of thing would be an exotic fantasy.

The reason I needed is that I'm doing some research type stuff and I thought it would speed up database access.
I have turned a rather lovely shade of green in my envy.

I can't wait until these are as big as regular drives.

Does it make any noise or generate any heat? Does it have a fan? This would be great for a huge RAID array (although a bit pricey at this point).

I have just bought a 250gb thing and dumped all my data onto it. It's great, this thing.

I can't believe how much things like hard drives have dropped in price over the last three years, it's insane.
I'm planning to get a new one just this weekend, in fact.

Turning green also. Stuff like this is getting so cheap, it's insane. I still remember when RAM was $100/MB, now it is (literally) as cheap as chips.
