If it weren't for that pesky pre-employment background investigation (and those meddling teenagers), i'd be so set.

That whole "degree in engineering, biology, or math" thing ruins my shot :-(

Oh, fuck, there's that, too, plus the whole not wanting to work for them and having heard many amusing yet disturbing stories of people who have.
Working for America can so creepy.

I've always wanted to be an astronaut. But not a current one. One of the swinging 60s-style astronauts who drove fast cars and drank martinis--occasionally at the same time. So I guess I really want to be an astronaut time-traveller.

Frequent travel may be required

One of my very best, long-time friends works for NASA, and she's been trying to get into the astronaut program. She's an engineering PhD who's worked in the space program for 15 years or so, and has been on the Space Shuttle, the European space station, and the Mir (though all while on the ground). Her online resume hasn't been upated in a few years, but you can see a little about your competition!

That's a very impressive resume, but I have a PhD in kickin' it oldschool and a second masters degree in chillin'.

+1 for cmonkey, NASA will say.

Okay, I am totally applying for this. Even though I have the same hangups about working for the Gov, but every engineering field that isn't computers seems to end up ultimately being funded by them anyway. Also there's the part where I'm significantly less qualified than mrmoonpie's friend. Eek.

Our promotional potential goes to 15! Take that, Nigel!

casarkos - can you run a 6 minute mile? The other commonality between astronauts is that they're ridiculously in shape.

I, not being an astronaut, can't even run a mile, period.

Not without dying immediately afterwards, at least. Bah, details.

That's quite the salary range.

Look at it this way, Lisa Nowak got in.

Freak on.
