A perfect end to a wonderful (extra long) weekend. Came out to Alberta for a family wedding this weekend. Apart from some tension at the reception (the result of a very old very nasty divorce), all went well, and I got to see my cousins, who I love dearly. But today was the best:[More:] my uncles and I took the horses out for a ride through the woods. Crisp fall air, prairie sunshine, the trees just changing colour, a horse who responded to the slightest indication of what I wanted to do. Watching my Alberta uncle, who is a real horseman (I just play at it when I'm out here), put his Porsche of a horse through her paces. Feeding them apples and brushing them down at the end. Couldn't think of a better way to end my trip.

How were your weekends? What've I been missing?
Oh! Plus, he gave me a bunch of his old jeans and his old cowboy hat. Nothing like loose-fitting, well broken in jeans all ready to go, I says.

I sat around and drank beer and watched M*A*S*H reruns. It was OK.

Damn, I haven't ridden a horse in so long I doubt if I remember how anymore.

As for me... Saturday I watched the Huskies lose to Ohio State and then took the dog to the park. Sunday we went to the inlaws' to check out the new bathroom (since we've got to re-do ours) and then watched the Seahawks lose to Arizona. Football aside, not a bad weekend. Yours sounds better, though.

Mr.s Plinth got a haircut, I took the kids to Costco. Sunday went to church then played with the community band at the annual town Chickem BBQ. I like my town.

It's just like riding a bike. Except that if you try to pedal a horse, you're going to get thrown on your ass.

Yeah, see, that was my problem back in the day.

I spent an entire 3-day weekend in this place. Doesn't look like much in that article, but it's geologically unique, packed with endless natural beauty and there are a host of incredibly cool things to do out there if you're even mildly adventurous. We took road and mountain bikes, then rented kayaks on Monday and basically explored it (and the Dolores River) from end to end.

Bonus: it's tucked away in a corner of the state that no one really gives a shit about, it's a pain in the ass to get to, and has little in the way of facilities, etc., so as long as you don't mind primitive camping, it's essentially unspoiled.

If you can't survive without a daily hot shower, this would be a tough trip (I can't even explain how ungodly cold that river water is...) Tho I must say, with the right equipment and attitude, canyoneering's a blast.
