Jonmc defends the indefensible, Part IV. [More:] I'd like to call your attention to the rooster haired Scotsman who's name has become (somewhat justifiably) synonymous with 'carrerist hack,' Rod Stewart Yeah, he's married himself a ton of starlets and cranked out some dreck, but none of that negates the fact that he has one of the great rock and roll voices and the astronomical heights his best work reaches. he sang some of the best British Blooze with Jeff beck, laid the groundwork for the Replacements with the Faces (Paul westerberg, among otherts has cited them as a major influence) and did some startlingly good work on his own. So whatever you think of what he's up to now, you can't front on his previous work. respect must be paid.

Jeff Beck Group - You Shook Me. This shows both Beck and Stewart (to say nothing of Ronnie Wood and Mick Waller) at the peak of their powers. If you think of Rod as a balladeer, this shows that he knows what to do with nasty blues rock as well.

Faces - Stay With Me. The gleeful drunken abandon with which the boys approach this song (especially Rod's vocals) make this number still the best boy's-night-out-on-the-prowl song of all time.

Rod Stewart - Every Picturer Tells A Story. This is the song that proves that there was more to his solo career than glitz and starlets. This number shows an incredibly eye for detail, and a vulnerability missing from much of his later work, not to mention a tremendous vocal performance.

So no matter what else he ever does, Rod The Mod's place in my personal pantheon is secure.
Nice writeup as usual jonmc. I like Rod Stewart. Your post inspired me. We're listening to him now.

Didn't Rod Stewart cover "People Get Ready"? I remember this video. Jeff Beck is sitting on a train car doing his guitar thing.

I love a lot of his older stuff. A lot of new stuff too. "I Don't Want to Talk About It" is a great song. I love the lyrics from "Have I Told You Lately". They're mushy but so sweet.

Yup, he reunited with Jeff Beck for the occasion. Everybody and his brother has covered that tune, but that's one of the better ones, due especially to Beck's playing.

Dude, you need to write a BOOK or something.

You need to be making some bucks off that talent. Seriously.

I totally dig the First Cut is the Deepest and I Don't Wanna Talk about It from Rod. Salut!

I didn't think that early Rod Steward needed defending. His work with Beck and the Faces was great. Truth is one of my favorite albums of all time. Somewhere around "A Night on the Town" though he started sucking and never really came back.

Jon, why aren't you writing music reviews?

...professionally, I mean?

We must agree to disagree on this matter.

Orange Swan: for a variety of reasons. One, there's a million know-it-all music geeks out there. Two, the music I'm interested in isn't exactly what sells magazines right now.

(I still have the pipedream of working as a consultant/researcher/assistant to a certain guitarist/actor/radio host but I haven't figured out an 'in,' yet. I'll be seeing him perform next month, maybe I can sleep with a roadie and get backstage.)

Every Picture Tells a Story is solidly among my top 10 rock albums list. Some day I need to decide what the other 9 are. But that one's in there.

If I could ever work with a band that could create that warm, bronzey, sincere, spontaneous, spot-on sound that Rod gets on "Every Picture Tells a Story," I would ask no more from music. That album is a gem. It sounds fresher than almost any new rootsy recording I could name.

The only thing that's indefensible about Rod is everything he's recorded in the last decade. Everyone loves his early shit.

KISS, Boston, et al? Not so much.

In the first link, "You Shook Me", he seems to be singing a different song from what the rest of the band is playing.

Those old Faces tracks still get my mojo working. I heard this on the radio the other day and love it as much as when I heard it as a kid.

It all went horribly wrong for Rod when he started all that "Tonight's The Night" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" bollocks. There is no possible excuse for "Sailing".

"Young Turks" redeemed him somewhat but he's something of a parody of his former self these days. In his day, though, there was no-one who came close.

Nice bloke, though. He lives in Epping when he's in the UK and I've seen him round and about the town a few times. No airs or pretentions.
