I Have a Hot Date! Woot! We're going steppin' tomorrow night. Which of these flickers should we go to? [More:]
The Bourne Ultimatum
Is there a better action lead than Matt Damon as Jason Bourne? Not on this evidence.

Atonement
A skilful directorial touch and a refreshingly smart script. And the acting is good enough to carry us through the slightly dull patches.

3:10 To Yuma

A wonderfully old-fashioned western that works in contemporary terms--a rousing demonstration that people can make the kinds of pictures they supposedly don't make anymore.

There's no damned way the She Who Must Be Obeyed will go see anything called Run, Fatboy, Run, Superbad, or Knocked Up.

The Simpsons Movie: No reason to see it on a big screen, really.

Rush Hour 3? OMGWTF?

Bratz: The Movie: *vomits* Excuse me.

Transformers: I have way too much pubic hair to be allowed in to see this film.

Catch and Release: I don't think so... it looks like shite.

Someone needs to explain Death Proof to me.
I saw 3:10 to Yuma. It was pretty good, though it's no date movie.

Have either of you read Atonement? Do you like going to film adaptations?

I enjoyed The Bourne Ultimatum.

We've been married 14 years. I think we're over date movies.

No, we've never read Atonement... but that's never stopped us before.

(We're very unlikely to see it, I think it's going to be Bourne because we loved the first two)

I liked Bourne. Not quite as good as the first, but much better than the second. I would recommend it without reservation.

Haven't seen the other two, though, so I can't really compare.

I hated Bourne. Too much action, not enough substance. If either of you are huge Matt Damon fans, well, okay, but otherwise I'd make a different choice.

Bourne was good (but not quite as good as 1 or 2) and, honestly, Transformers was awesome (I'm 44), it's a stupid-fun movie that you are not required to take seriously for a moment. The Simpsons is totally skippable, unfortunately. If King of Kong is playing anywhere, I highly recommend that, it's much better and funnier than it sounds, and in the end, it tells a nice story.

I liked Bourne too. I also saw SuperBad. It was stupid, silly funny.

Stardust. It's AWESOME.

Moi aussi.

Stardust isn't on...

Don't sit too close to the front in Bourne. I got seasick and had to get my money back; apparently it happens to a lot of people.

Ya. Bourne, especially in the fight scenes, is full of quick cuts and shaky camera work, so sit a bit farther back.
I liked it. If you liked the first two, then this is your choice. Wraps some things up. Although I got confused and thought the old dude was someone who had died in the first one. Also I was secretly hoping they'd find some way to revive Franka Potente. Love her.
Transformers was a fun movie to take the kids too, but nothing great otherwise.
I read Atonement, not a bad book. Would probably be a boring movie and I've read some crappy reviews of it.

The only one of the above that I've seen is Atonement. It was fantastic! Moving without being sentimental, serious without being boring. I hadn't previously read the novel, and normally I'm not a fan of film adaptations.

All the reviews I've seen thought it was great, particularly Newsnight Review. You should go and see it!

3:10 to Yuma for Pete's sake. I'll stake my otherwise worthless Film Degree on it!

Maybe some people have forgotten what a force of nature Russell Crowe can be, but I haven't.
/sent away to Australia years ago for cut scenes of The Quick and the Dead where he does Sharon Stone

Crowe's really good in 3:10, no doubt.

Mangold did Copland, too, which I loved. 3:10 looks good.

Heard good things about more trad date-flick Waitress (at the Empire), and o' course, there's always Rat in Hat with Spatula.

Haven't seen the other two, but I did see Bourne. The camera doesn't hold still throughout the whole movie, or if it doesn't there are so few times that they're not worth mentioning. I came away with a vague headache and a deathwish for whomever thought it was a good idea to not anchor the damned thing. It's an action movie: chucking the camera around doesn't help make it more actiony. I get pissed at BSG for the same reason, so if you can stand that, you may be able to stand the fact that the producers had hired a gang of epileptics to shoot it. Plot? It was an ok wrap-up to the trilogy. Not worth the full price, only the matinée.

I saw Waitress out of solidarity for the director who was murdered and hated it...SPOILERS

The main character leaves her abusive husband with no means of supporting herself. The insinuation is that because she is poor and lives in a red state she has no access to an abortion--however the main character of Eye of God made it clear that the one trip she made was the only one she could afford and had had plenty of time to think it over. There is never a discussion of her having her baby adopted.

The man who is depicted as being attracted to Adrienne Shelly's character comes off as a creepy stalker.

I think it would have been more fulfilling for Jenna to somehow get herself to the contest than have Andy Griffith play fairy godfather.

I liked Superbad a bit more than Knocked Up--though your SO's tolerance for frat boy movies may veto both...Atonement hasn't yet opened here.
