13 September 2007

I just test drove a SmartCar. They've been everywhere else for years, scheduled for sale in the US 1Q'08. Not bad. I'm gonna keep my reservation and hope to get mine by next summer.[More:]

They're probably one of those things people either love or hate, but I need something to replace my 11 year old paint peeling Integra. I live in town, work from home, but still need something to run short errands & I'm too chicken to do a scooter, so it seems like a decent compromise.
Fun! Also, hi!

Have you seen the roadster?

They're cute, the tour was in Buffalo not long ago.
A friend of mine tried to drive one and couldn't fit inside, though!

They're cute but too expensive for what you get. I only paid a couple of thousand more for my Scion and it fits four big adults and cargo and still gets 30 MPG. Plus as Kelly said, I probably wouldn't fit in it.

What's the mileage? The parkability of this thing is its killer feature, IMHO. If you live in San Francisco a car this small can really make life easier.

I also have a Scion and completely adore it. I got the boxy xB model, which is a monster, esthetically, but incredibly roomy for passengers and cargo on the inside.

Supposedly it gets 40 mpg. Tank only holds about 8 gallons.

Yeah who cares about parallel parking, just nose it in! It's only as long as a regular car is wide. 2 can fit in one standard parking space nose to nose.

The only reason I took a second look pricewise was because they start at $12k. I was looking at the $14k. There's one more model - a convertible I think that's about $17k.

I really like Hondas at heart, so if it turned out to be a drag to drive I'd say screw it and go get a civic hybrid.

Our local council quickly passed a by-law to prevent this (and the nose-in idea) happening after it became apparent that people were doing it. Killjoys.

Have a look at this. I was impressed - maybe you will be too.

Yea parking two to a metered slot would get you at least a $10 ticket here in Pittsburgh if not a trip to the auto pound.

These city councils should think again. Simply halve the length of a "standard" spot to make them Smart-sized, and then in one fell swoop you've *doubled* the available parking in the city, and more than doubled the revenue from expired meters, since regular cars will need to feed two meters, requiring more coins and increasing the likelihood of running overtime and incurring fines.

How could voters not love that?

Can I get one for each foot?

dg, that video is awesome. Remind me to never slam into a concrete divider at 70 mph.

I've seen Smart cars around the area now and then. They are cute but my fear is that they are as invisible as motorcycles.

We wanted to get one but here we haven't seen a version for less than 20k. Someday you will be ours!

40mpg is pretty sad. A run-of-the-mill 2800lb Civic can get 40mpg. Hell, I can get 31mpg in a Maxima just by driving smoothly. A car that tiny should get 70mpg.
