All of this viral corporate advertising is confusing me. Huh?[More:]I keep imagining how it must've sounded when they pitched using a gorilla, a studio drum kit & Phil Collins to sell chocolate on the internet. I dunno... I just don't get it.
You know, when I first saw this I didn't get it either. Isn't there supposed to be some "in the know" aspect to these adds that makes me feel like I'm at the cool kids Internet table? I'm just gonna assume that I'm no longer part of the target demographic.

Yeah, I had the same feeling. If, however, the ape had laid a large chocolate egg at the end, it would have had a direct and surreal tie in to Cadbury as well as a nice summation of Phil Collin's post Genesis career.

why?

Well it just seemed like the right thing to do. There's no clever science behind it - it's just an effort to make you smile, in exactly the same way Cadbury Dairy Milk does. And that's what we aim to continue to do; simply make you smile. So if a drumming gorilla's not enough, wait until you see what else we have up our sleeves.

great. thanks for sharing this, miss lynnster

Maybe the gorilla has been waiting his whole life to play the drums to that song. And we're supposed to feel that way when we eat the Cadbury chocolate bar: we've been waiting our whole lives for a chocolate bar that is that good.

*shrugs*

How does viral marketing work? Someone posts a link to the video and asks others to explain it.

This is on British TV quite often and is rather startling the first time it comes on. I think the attempt at taking it viral or whatever bullshit is just a stab in the dark.

Aside: I always thought that song was about wanking.

This is nothing new - just watch most of the beer commercials during a football game. Almost none of them have any reference to the taste of the beer, either.

Whatever their rationale, it's working - the ad was on the news here last night. How much do you think an advertising agency would pay to have their ad featured on the TV news? They probably came in their pants just thinking about it.
