Put ze candle beck! I left the tv on in the other room and forgot about it. Ah, but suddenly I heard a familiar song... [More:]I instantly had an urge to rush in there and plant myself on the couch for the rest of the night because LORD I love that movie! I've seen it a million times and I can recite it but I still never tire of it. What movies make you react like that?
"Said-a-give, give him the said-a-give!"
This movie is at the top of my list of favs. Blazing Saddals, too.

I also stop everything I'm doing for Dorian Gray. I don't know all of the 'why' except it was the first film I ever saw and, I think, may be responsible for opening my mind and heart to the power of visual media/communications. I was in 9th grade English class the first time I saw it.

Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are on the list. The Godfather I & II. The Maltese Falcon or the Big Sleep. The Philidelphia Story (or almost any Cary Grant comedy). Blade Runner. Bullit. Manhattan or Annie Hall. Lots of the Marx Brothers movies (the earlier ones). The Seven Samurai and the Magnificent Seven. There's a bunch more.

Bonus points (no googling) for why the horses reared up every time Cloris Leachman's character was named.

I remember originally hearing that it was the German word for glue, but then when I studied German in college I found out that was totally wrong. Which is a bummer, because that was funny.

I wish it was true, tho. I want to give Mel Brooks more credit for layering jokes.
