AskMecha: How do you decide if the dress is cute or slutty? So, I bought this dress (in cranberry). I've got 20 years and at least one cup size on that little girl, so it doesn't fit me like this. I tried it with a couple of the matching undergarments/tanks/&c which just looked silly, but I liked it enough to buy it and take it home. [More:]

Now I'm wondering about it. So the question is: how would you decide: cute or just slutty? Or is it one of those questions that if you have to ask at all, you already know the answer? Do shoes make that big a difference?

I'm keeping it because when it's tied strapless, it's definitely on the "cute" end of the scale. I'm just on the fence about it tied like a halter, which is infinitely more comfortable.
Oops. That was supposed to be "more inside"

This post is useless without photos.

(It's all in how you wear it, and how self-confident you are)

Accessories make a world of difference. That tied like a halter with:

and maybe a flamenco shoe with the strap on the middle of the foot (simple or a little extra fab), and you're sassy not slutty.
Plus the skirt hits the knees, that's a good length.

Plus you're suddenly hella spanish inspired. Flamenco shoes and bolero cardigan. ay ay. I swear I didn't think of that when I made the post.

go strapless by all means, are you kidding?

and rock on, 20 years and at least one cup more make you more attractive, not less.

and high, high heels. totally.

I was in American Apparel the other day, and to me all the stuff looked SO clingy, which is something you're going to have to take into account. If it's clinging to body rolls, if you can see panty* or bra lines- it's gonna look cheap. That said, a good sweater or cardigan could move it in the other direction.

Or is it one of those questions that if you have to ask at all, you already know the answer?

For me, it is.

Oh yea, this = * was going to be a rant and rave about how a panty line is a panty line, and I'm sick of seeing thongs through clothes, as though that somehow counts less than a full on panty line.

I like seeing things through clothes.

OH THO-O-ONGS!!! RIGHT!

I like seeing them, too?

dabitch: you make me cry with those pretty pretty shoes that I do not own, but that bolero idea is aces.

TPS: it's cut A-Line pretty full under the bustline, so it doesn't cling to anything that rolls and it's much heavier knit than the t-shirts. They sell a lighterweight jersey version of the dress and you're right, it looks completely cheap. So, okay for hanging around my sister's deck when no-one's looking, but way too much for a date? and you are *so* right about a panty line being a panty line. Man, Hanes makes an invisible panty that you can buy at a damned Walgreens. Wear it or go commando.

Oh, and my vote's for cute!

Are you planning to squeeeeeze your arms together, bend over at the waist, plant your hands palm-down on my table at the bar, then wiggle your [redacted] in my face while I'm having a quiet drink?

No?

Then it's cute!

(Also: No? Too bad!)

It's a great dress with a little extra bompity-bomp, but there's nothing wrong with some bompidy-bomp!

No matter what the answer, in another twenty years you'll wish you wore it when you could! Go for it!

If it's a casual* date you probably look hawt in it, and that's always good for a date! Rainbaby speaketh the trooooth!

Why does every American Apparel model shot seem to look like the pics they take off some perv's computer, the ones they can actually show on the news?

Also, I vote for wear it. No one ever says "she looked cute, but would have looked better if her boobs were smaller."

I think it's because of the founder who has gained some notoriety for thinking with the smaller head.

I own this dress, in black. I'm not too happy with it in the chest area when it's just a halter, but I've worn AA's more sheer tops (specifically this one) over it so it looks more cute/sporty with a hint of a halter thing going on rather than full on va-va-voomy. The skirt shape itself is flattering. They also have a pencil skirt version of this dress, and that's obvs more "depends on your body type" but this one's forgiving thanks to the cut. Have you seen their instructional video for this dress? There's like a million ways you can tie it. You can even turn it into a strapless dress and it looks less ahem, boobage bearing that way than if you just wore it as a halter top. I've personally also had success turning this dress into a skirt and tied the ties around my waist so that there'd be a little bow to the side.

Me and AA=love, hate relationship. I mean, they've got good basic stuff and I do buy from them a lot for different colors of things to supplement and fill out my wardrobe with, but the other day I was fondling one of their ribbed tank-top dresses in neon/chartreuse green. I would've looked like a coked out club kid in it, but the color goes so well with my skin tone (It really does!!). I almost bought it in cranberry, but had to stop myself once I realized I was seriously thinking that a gold lame baseball cap and a matching fanny pack would go oh so well with it.

I think I've said this before, but each time I think "...I wanna punch Dov Charney in his creepy face soooo baa....omg! They now have this shirt in orchid! I effin' love this color~~~!"
posted by kkokkodalk 06 September | 16:26
kkokkodalk: I have a similar hate-love relationship with them; this dress is the first thing that's tempted me to the love thing in several years. I missed the videos--it works nicely as a strapless, but I'm more comfortable with the halter top--thanks for pointing them out; there might be an option between halter and strapless that works well.

20 years and at least one cup more make you more attractive, not less.
Second that, although the one cup more is optional in my book. We could provide a definitive answer for you if we had photos to compare, though.

Anyway, who says slutty is always bad?
posted by dg 06 September | 17:28
It definitely works nicely as a strapless, and the bandero or cardigan is just as good to pair with a strapless as with a halter. Also, I can imagine it being cute with some ballet flats/Mary Jane-type ballet flats and a cardigan. Dresses it down.

It's like day into night Barbie! Remember her? You would like, take off her suit jacket and turn her skirt inside out.

Anyway, my rule of thumb for cute versus slutty: If it's short, it shouldn't be low-cut, vice versa. Knee-length with this dress is good, but if you're taller and it hits mid-thigh, it's not as good. Just past the knee would be even better.

Also, how does the keyhole make you feel? What would you wear underneath the dress? My least favorite thing is buying a garment and then finding I have no underthings that work with it.
posted by brina 06 September | 18:12
Oh brina, it's definitely a band-aid bra or nothing at all, unless I wear it strapless, because of the keyhole. I have one plunge-front bra, but it's not a halter. Anyway. For those who might care, a quick photo set.

crush-onastick, that dress is AWESOME on you. halter low -- the first two pics, look best in my opinion.

Cute, slutty, whatever. I ain't got time to answer this - I have to clean the drool off my keyboard.

I really like the way it looks in the first four photos, the middle two are meh, and I'd avoid the last four as they're the least flattering.

And man, you're one gorgeous dame.

Thanks for the input (and compliments!); the wisdom of the internet saves me again!

I dig it. I tried this on in the store and my husband loved it. I didn't buy it though (I bought another dress instead) but I tried it on a few different ways. The first two ways are my favorite, but then again, I've been known to wear a pareo tied like this or this as a normal summer dress.

TOTALLY CUTE!!!! No question whatsoever. SERIOUSLY. You rock it! You have a great figure!

This is something I'm always sensitive about because it's a question I have to ask myself all the time. There are so many super cute outfits that I SO wish I could wear but while they look appropriate and adorable on an Audrey Hepburn shape they look totally different on someone buxom. Especially when I'm dressing for work I always have to be so careful and aware of how my necklines look & stuff. Man, I really wish breasts were just detachable for special occasions...
posted by miss lynnster 06 September | 22:43
Totally cute. . .no sluttiness at all in those pics.

I like everything but the crossed look on you with that dress. . .

My two cents, whatever it's worth.

You carry it just fine.
posted by arse_hat 06 September | 23:24
It's not something I'd wear---rough skin and stretch marks--but it looks like everything that's supposed to be covered is.

Forget the bolerto, you're HAWT. :)

I like the knot the best followed closely by the halter with the multiple crosses. The single cross halter is a "no" in my book.
posted by Lola_G 07 September | 09:15
If I owned any item of clothing that looked that fabulous, I would never take it off. I like the halter2 versions with the twisted ties. Seriously, you look gorgeous.
posted by theora55 07 September | 09:43
Yeah, hot. Not slutty at all, and I like the first two versions the best.

again, I say "thanks, guys" really. I don't have a local girlfriend who can say "yes" or "no" when I'm shopping, except my always-damned-busy and now clumsily pregnant sister.

Coming in with a totally late vote for "super cute" -- the dress looks gorgeous on you in those photos.

And seconding brina's general advice for either low-cut or short, but not both.

Yeah... by the time I woke up and saw the thread this morning all the feedback I would have offered had already been rendered, but I, too, will chime in with, Slutty - No! Cute - Yes! Halter with knots - superawesome!
