I love how she always changes; she's an actress of incredible talent, and it's a shame that only good old crazed David Lynch gives her the kind of lead roles she deserves.
I just saw Dern in the horrible film "Year of the Dog" (which I don't recommend because first, I can't stand Molly Shannon, and second, the message is all about the annoying mental illness of a lonely, unstable, single woman who selfishly fills her life with stray pets because she can't find a good man and doesn't want to be alone). A plot which sounds familiar, and we all know "THAT GIRL", but who really wants to be immersed in all that crazy? And this movie definitely brings the crazy.
But Dern's (unfortunately small) performance makes the waste of time worthwile, playing a neurotic, southern california mother of two, crazy-overprotective, an overt perfectionist (she's costumed in pink & white outfits and wears lots of make-up). It's awesome to see her in this role, especially remembering the last performance i saw her in was Inland Empire...and the two films are nowhere near the same vernacular.
it's prolly worth it to grab the filez and suffer through the horror of the film just to glean Dern's hilarious reading of the role.
