31 August 2007

It's Friday here. And time for photos. Almost a year ago I posted one of the photos inside, and it was received well here as well as among my friends.[More:] It was a breakthrough moment for me and my photography. While the photo was an accident, it was exactly what I was looking for. Now it's almost a year later and a few photos later and I'm posting the second photo of the same type of flowers taken at the same open space in Boulder, though this time the photo is intentional. I've come a long way in a year, and I have to say, one of the best things that's happened to me since then in my photography is the tutelage of lonefrontranger. Without her I'd still be having happy accidents, and a whole lot more crap than I normally have. I owe more to her for my photography than I can possibly repay.

Oh, and while I like this year's photo better since it is how I imagined it, it doesn't mean anyone should like either one more than the other. I happen to like this year's better, but it's what I saw with my eye on the trail.

Oh, and I should also say that it's thanks to MeCha for me meeting lfr, and becoming the photographer I am today. Hopefully next year I'll have another photo of asters that kicks ass on these.

I really like the first one... I would crop it so that the bottom is tidied up a bit (the tips of those petals draw your eyes away from the subject too much) and the stem on the left is removed (for the same reasons). Then again, I'm a little crop-happy compared to some.

Great work, eekacat. The domelike mound in the background of the first one resembles a planet seen from space, and with the flowers in the foreground I want to launch off on a ride through the great wide empty in the flower-powered SS Fitzhugh. Uranus, here we come!

Uh, exactly who put exactly what in my coffee?

Both pics have strong points. There's more control of lighting in the second one - I'm drawn to the strong contrasting light in it. It's the flower as sole focus. Plus, I just always love close-ups and their out-of-focus backgrounds. The first attracts me "oh, pretty flowers, good pic." while the second says that, plus "oh neat. Good photography, wish I could do that"

Yeah, I really love the second one a lot. There are so many ways of making art, and this is one, to me. I won't go into all the reasons I prefer it, but I think it's lovely.

Hey, neat! Here are two photos I took of the same pouf of mimosa foliage/flowers on two separate Bug Sur camping trips. January and June.

I remember the first one from last year. It was my desktop wallpaper for quite a while. And hey, lookit there it is again! :)

It's not that I don't like #2, because I really do, but #1 is more appealing to me.

Great pics, eekacat.

Interesting to hear your comments on your preference of one or the other. I think mightshould gets the closest to how I feel about them. Like I said, there's no right answer, just as long as you have a reason for your answer.

I like the contrasting colour and texture of the big rock behind the flowers. Maybe #2 is more technically correct or beautiful or whatever, I just find #1 more interesting. I want to go on the walk where you found #1 and see what else is around.
