i r magicked teh internets My internets were out for about a day. The 'sync' light flashed and the ready light cycled on and off on our (virgin) modem. Then suddenly they were back.[More:]
I wonder what caused this and hope it doesn't happen again. We have a tech coming out Saturday, they should probably come.

Now I can do my research shit, which is, at this point, the collection and categorisation of as many blogs by Muslims done in the UK as possible, especially Scottish blogs.

My research ethics book says I shouldn't harvest data without announcing myself as a researcher. Fair enough, but I think confining myself to blogs and trying for creative commons blogs as much as possible is a long way from lurking on cancer survivor forums.

The Psych Meds that I am taking seem to make me clench my jaw, but it is markedly better today than it was yesterday.

I am now off to register with the dentist a few hundred yards away, who, astonishingly, is taking NHS patients. Then I will sign up at the library.

All part of the fun of cable broadband.

Well, BtGoG, one could argue that the content of blogs themselves are closer to newspapers than communities, although the comments on blogs should definitely be tread through very lightly. Out of courtesy for the feelings of the authors, I would ask for approval if you're thinking about publishing anything from the blog posts, but AFAIK, you don't need legally or ethically need to get permission to read, coallate, or publish short exerpts from them.

mudd, thanks for the thoughts.. i don't intend to publish anything, this is me trying to finally finish my university degree, so nobody (i hope) will ever see it except a few professors..

Your university should have an ethics committee. They will most likely require that you get clearance from them for any research involving people. This includes the obvious stuff like whacking thousands of volts through them, but also less obvious stuff like conducting interviews. Virtual people might not count, but your university's ethics committee (really, the office that does their admin, not the actual committee) should be able to tell you what clearance you need.

These days there's most likely an ethics committee at faculty / school / department level too.

Congrats on getting an NHS dentist, btw, I hear that's almost impossible these days.
