Why can't people spell coffee? [More:]Is there some British spelling where coffee only has one e? Over the last week, I suddenly have seen tons of people spelling it coffe.

It's like... that word that means once you hear about something, you'll hear about it over and over again... and yeah, I can't remember that word either!
I don't know, but you can get a coffe table.

Nope, no British spelling like that.

Reckless, untested speculation:

1. The (fairly unusual) double-double mechanic of the 'ffee' construct leads to performance errors when the left hand wants to "wind down" prematurely.

2. Most words that sound like coffee are spelled with a n 'ffy' construct, so the three-keypress pattern hijacks the 'ffee' spelling and leads to the monstrous offspring that is 'ffe'.

My local corner shop has a sign advertising »coffe«. That's pretty darn stupid, considering that my local corner shop is located in Stockholm, Sweden.

Maybe they were French people? Talking about this guy?

Maybe "cafe" confuses them?

Maybe "cafe" confuses them?

That was my guess as Brits seem to pronounce it "caf". I think it is because Brits don't like to pronounce any French words "correctly" :) ie, Phil-et.

But coffee isn't French.

so, um, ignore me. I've had way to much coffe this morning.

I personally believe the US Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh...people out there in our nation don't have coffee, and, uh, I believe that our coffee distribution like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our coffee distribution over here in the US should help the US, err, should help South Africa and the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our coffee supply for our children.

Spelling is processed in the cerebral cortex, which is susceptible to mild shocks from certain vacumes.
