Which Sketch Comedy TV show is "you?" Just pondering that, watching A Bit of Fry and Laurie.
I love the tacos. They're probably the best tacos I've ever had. But if I had to choose between the tacos and my mail, I think I'd have to choose ... the mail.
It's really a tossup between The State and UCB for me. I'm just so happy that someone else remembers The State that I can't really think straight.
Incidentally, I recently watched Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas and there is a great little scene with State alums Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon as two campus cops. I was hoping for more of them, but alas, just the one scene. Still, the movie overall was quite cute and quirky and certainly worth watching if you're looking for a fun comedy.
I'm totally UCB, with occasional State-ist leanings. But in my heart of hearts, when the sun is setting a deep cool red over the hills, I can only think of the Running Faggot, Running Free.
I remember watching Wayne and Shuster while growing up. To date, I can still remember the song with which they closed every show but none of their bits ever really stuck with me. I was also a big fan of A Bit of Fry and Laurie as well as French and Saunders.
If it weren't for Monty Python I would probably only have watched "A ampersand B" sketch comedy groups before college. Oh, and Rowan Atkinson. Although he's not a group per se.
Later on it was Kids in the Hall, The Tracy Ullman Show, The Ben Stiller Show, Mr. Show with Bob and David (more ampersands!) as well as the occasional Upright Citizen's Brigade and Not the 9 o'clock News. I do remember there being some SNL and Benny Hill, although that was more due to their ubiquity rather than my preferences.
As for which one is "me"? None of them. All of them. Well, except for Benny Hill.
Thanks to the wonders of DVD, I've recently discovered the genius of SCTV (I didn't really get it as a child -- the low production values threw me). I've been renting my way through the show's history (I'm currently on vol. 3) and it just keeps getting better and better.
Still, if I had to choose a show that most reflects my sensibilities, I'd have to go with Mr. Show, and to a lesser extent The Ben Stiller Show. Generation X, represent!
I worked in locations on MTV's Human Giant, the most locations-intensive sketch comedy show ever.
Those guys are funny. Anyone see Blackballed: the Bobby Dukes Story? A few of the Human Giant guys are in it. It's one of my favorite funny movies ever.
