I CAN HAZ IRC COCKTAIL PARTY? I'm depressed. I need a party. So, here is where we plan our giant IRC all-come party, 'K? Do step inside and let's work it out... →[More:]

So, I was talking to mudpuppie, and we wanna have an IRC party. I want to have drinks and be foolish and chat on the IRC with lots of fun bunnies. When and how can we do this?

Soon, like sometime this week, would be happyfiying; I don't care what day. Time differences mean that I will probably have to be a morning drinker... but I'm willing to sacrifice. Also, it can just be an all-day/all-night kind of thing, where anyone drops in at any time, whenever they can. But it would be cool if a lot of people in the same time zone agreed to try to show up around a certain time, to keep it from being too straggle-y.

Any thoughts? We'll organize it here, then announce the plan in a separate post.

Well. Actually I didn't mean people in "the same time zone" - but more like the same continent. You get my drift. If most US peeps can show up during a certain time window, I will try to make it during that time, and the same for Europe, Asia, whatever. EVEN IF I HAVE TO DRINK ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. :)

Correction: you will need to be an early-hours drinker. There is a big difference between just drinking in the morning, and staying up late and drinking until the new day arrives.

Here's a table of equivalent times in UTC, US East and West Coast, Athens, and Melbourne.

I reckon you should start in your early evening, and get the Asia/Australia people to stay up a couple of hours past midnight to join you. Then, come back around 1 or 2 in the morning to drink with the East Coast crew. And then just keep going until you greet the West Coast's evening, and your fresh, inebriated dawn.

So far we have Saturday on the table, which sounds wise, as it lends itself to allowing people to from different zones to drop in when other folks might be around, since most people won't be at work.

Agreement? Disagreement?

Other thoughts? Pants optional?

Friday night would be better for me, to be honest, but I can probably join in during the early-morning GMT phase of the Saturday party. (I'll be at the theatre on Saturday night.)

well, 'pode, if we carry on enough for all the continents to represent, maybe you could join in at any point that you had a free bit of time. I'm going to take a look at Chris' times table and see what we can do. Would you be able to do a Fri. night thingy?

Also, just in case I disappear... My computer has been doing weird shutting-down things, which I thought I had licked, but it's starting up again - and my System Restore is not system-restoring. If it goes out completely, I'm just gonna get in bed and stay there until sometime in September.

yay! I'm smiling at imagining everyone actually dressing up and sitting at their computers, fancy cocktail glass in hand.

We'll also have coffee, tea, fruit punch, sparkling water, and chocolate milk at the courtesy bar.

Love the idea, even though I'm not usually an IRCer. Probably not available Saturday, but will join if I can.

I think everyone should be eating hors'd'oevres and canapes, and drinking cocktails. And everyone should dress up. Since it's IRC, it's pretty easy to do this.

Saturday night is good for me. I work all day, until 7 or 8 pm, but I'll check in once I get home and the kids are in bed.

An IRC party will cheer me up. I was invited to a fancy, shmancy black tie charity thing this Saturday but I can't go because I'm working! I never work on Saturdays. Dammit. I don't have a dress, so maybe it's a good thing.

taz, if your PC is shutting down on it's own, it could be the fan. Overheated PCs will shut down before they melt. If you don't feel any hot air exhaust anywhere around the case, your fan is dead [they die with alarming regularity - it may be the most commonly replaced component other than ram]. If your fan isn't dead and you own a windows box, try this:

Start>Run>type "cmd">enter>type "chkdsk /r">enter

You'll be asked if you want to run chkdsk on next reboot... type "Y" and reboot.

Given your current hot weather, overheating is the most likely culprit. In an emergency, you could try stripping all the cover/s off the box and pointing a household fan in the general direction of the innards. In the absence of a household fan, just opening the case may do the trick (this won't work if the fan in the power supply or on the CPU is dead, but will help if it is just a general "too fucking hot" problem). Making sure the case isn't sitting on a carpeted floor can help, as they often draw cool air from the bottom of the case at the front and carpet can block the air inlet.

Don't try filling the case with ice - that won't work.

Thanks, guys! Yep, I think it is the heat. The fan seems to be working (though, how well - I don't know), and with seanyboy's help I ran some antivirus stuff (plus Ccleaner), just to be sure, which came up okay. It was shutting down this morning, and after I turned the AC on, it stopped dying. (*knocks on wood*)

I guess it's just as exhausted by the heat as I am.

Yeah, my old computer has to have the case open in the summer or it dies every five minutes. It has THREE damn fans in there but it's just not enough. So I've given up and leave the side off and point a box fan at it and we're both happy. Actually, it's happier than me because there's not enough room for me in the fan too and I'm just sitting there with sweat pouring off me. /tmi

I finally figured out that I can't possibly organize it (hey! depressed people can't organize!)... So, I think we'll call it an all-day-all-night-saturday-but-maybe-starting-friday-maybe-lasting-'til-sunday-irc cocktail-party-with-or-without-cocktails. Sound good? :}

I'm going to step in and declare that the 'official' Global Taz IRC Cocktail Party will be on the evening/night of Saturday 25 August, whenever that evening/night occurs for you. However, for those who wish to drop in for specific other peoples' evenings/nights, here are some times:

If we kick off at 2pm UTC on Saturday, that's 11pm in Tokyo and midnight in Melbourne.

By 6pm UTC on Saturday, it'll be 11:30pm in India.

At 9pm UTC on Saturday it will be midnight in Athens, and 10pm in London.

By 4am UTC on Sunday it's midnight in New York.

And at 7am UTC on Sunday it'll be midnight in San Francisco.

If anyone manages to make the whole thing, that's about 17 hours of drunk IRCing, which I think is sufficient for anyone's weekend. Have I missed anyone out?

And of course, your regular unscheduled drunk IRCing will be continuing, as previously unnaounced.
