Vick will plead guilty. What a piece of shit he turned out to be. It sickens me that I cheered so loudly for him during Virginia Tech's run at the national championship the year after I graduated.
My apologies in advance, but the FARK headline for the CO incident was their best in weeks:
Carbon monoxide leak sends Virginia Tech students to hospital, sparks pro-CO nuts to call for all students to be armed with CO tanks so they can defend themselves
There's no shame in having rooted for Vick. I never would have because Hokies are a bunch of chickenfuckers, but I idolized Orenthal James and Len Bias before their falls, and their eventual, err, issues, can't change at least one part of history -- it's pointless to deny that it was fun to watch them play.
But I'm with you on his being a stain on the country. Dogfighting? Hamstring him and kennel him with four randy malamutes, I say.
In April 2007, Vick, Peace and Phillips executed about eight dogs that performed poorly in another testing session, according to the fact summaries of Peace and Phillips. The summaries say Vick took part in the executions, done by hanging and drowning.
What a sick, fucked up person. I hope his life is permanently ruined when he's released from jail and he doesn't land an ESPN commentary job or something.
Three explorers were captured by savages. They were kept in a cage. One morning the head savage came and took one of the explorers. He said, "Do you want death, or goomi goomi?". The explorer replied uncertainly...."Um...goomi goomi?" He was taken away and the two remaining explorers were tortured all day by the sounds of his agonized screams, and then silence.
The next morning the head savage came and took another of the explorers. He said, "Do you want death, or goomi goomi?". The explorer replied uncertainly...."Uh...I don't want death, so....goomi goomi?" He was taken away and the remaining explorer was tortured all day by the sounds of his agonized screams, and then silence.
The next morning the head savage came and took the last explorer. He said, "Do you want death, or goomi goomi?". The explorer replied. "My God, I want death, please! Definitely death." The head savage said, "Death. Fine. But first, a little goomi goomi!"
The Vick seed is tainted. Michael has proven himself to be as much of a thug as his little brother Marcus. It just took a bit of time for Michael's true nature to reveal itself.
Michael had a swagger the few times I saw him on campus. As one who prefers animals over people in most cases, I won't hide my smile when I think of all of the much more accomplished thugs who will challenge that swagger in pound-michael-vick-in-the-ass prison.
During a halftime commentary yesterday, Bob Costas mentioned that there's speculation that other NFL players were involved, at least in the wagering. One of the big questions concerning the NFL, he said, is whether Vick will implicate other players in return for a reduced sentence.
He asked Tiki Barber, who's a commentator now, for his take on that. Barber's response was that if Vick were to go to jail (which now looks definite, though it wasn't yesterday), he'd have no trouble getting a job after his release (provided that he's not banned by Goodell), because he's a big talent and somebody would want him. Barber went on to say, however, that if Vick rolled on other NFL players, he'd be blackballed in any locker room, anywhere.
What really struck me about this is that he said he'd be shut out if he ratted, not because he's a disgusting, soulless thug who drowned and electrocuted and fucking hanged innocent dogs who just didn't draw enough blood.
I imagine the plea bargain included accommodations in which involuntary anal or oral intercourse would be out of the norm.
Not that I would wish that on anyone.
On the irony note: Living where I do, I have rooted for ex-Duck Joey Harrington, and hoped/expected, every season, for this one to be his break-out year. I am dreading this season, but I can't look away. He is one of the genuine nice guys, and it's been hard to see him flop.
Isn't it just a little discomfitting, though, that one can still purchase a Carolina Panthers jersey with Rae Carruth's name and number on it, or a #32 Bills jersey that reads "SIMPSON", but not a Falcons #7? Kill women, sure, but don't fuck with the dogs.
BitterOldPunk: yes, and therein lies my angst with the ongoing spin machine that is the media these days.
(note: this is not to detract in any way from the previous sentiments in this thread but I'M JUST SAYING....)
the only hope i have for this is that it will (however briefly) raise awareness for what is a serious and long-term entrenched animal rights issue, and not just in the U.S.
a few months ago, the Denver Post ran an article reminding everyone to keep their pets under strict supervision / lock and key at all times. it's not just foxes and coyotes you have to worry about around here anymore. apparently the adoption fees at the shelters + craigslist's crackdown on pet 'giveaway' ads, means that the dogfighting rings are now resorting to stealing pet dogs out of people's yards to serve as 'bait' to train their fighting dogs on.
I'm going to chime in on this un-bunny-like hatefest and say I hope he plays again. I don't believe a person's ever completely lost just for things that he's done. And Vick still has a lot of potential to do good in the world. He could step up and be a positive role model if he would just come clean about his mistake and how he made it.
And like it or not, as probably the best black quarterback ever to play the game, he *is* a role model, not only for millions of black kids and white kids and polka-dotted kids nationwide, but also for a lot of white team owners who are probably going to think twice the next time they consider hiring a quarterback whose "native culture and personality" (to paraphrase Blank) are foreign to them. Especially after JaMarcus Russell's latest antics: causing a team to essentially waste a #1 draft pick, while not on the level of brutalizing innocent animals, is still very much against the spirit of fair play.
I hate what Vick did to those dogs. But I hate the idea that we have to lynch the man and salt the earth he's buried in, too. The guy deserves a shot at atonement, if not redemption.
someone clearly missed the giant negro thread on mefi. althought that was an unfortunate confluence of commentary, mine was a reference to the mefi thread, and not an extension of chuckdarwin's "chimps and gorillas" remark.
the ghosts of all those poor tortured dogs are barking happily today, and it's a very sweet sound
I hope Vick gets sentenced to receive mandatory therapy also, not just jail time -- he certainly has the money to pay for it himself -- because that kind of sadistic animal cruelty indicates some deepseated shit going on in one's head. and he'll be out in a year or so, maybe in the meantime he can get some shit figured out, too, besides trying to be very careful in the showers (as others said above, if you're some big mean thug in jail, what kind of clout in prison's savage ecosystem does it give you to be able to hurt a NFL player? he'll have to be careful)
but then, one's heart goes out to his poor sponsors who won't be able to sell all that slave-made merchandise now
as probably the best black quarterback ever to play the game,
?
The guy deserves a shot at atonement, if not redemption.
atonement means therapy, not a comeback to his career and his millions -- aren't you a therapist by the way? as I argued last month, the NFL (and other pro sports organizations) must operate in such a way that it avoids unnecessary bad PR. Vick is officially a criminal now, he confessed (after lying through his teeth of course). I'd be surprised to see a team pick him up after he's done his jail time. Not to mention, he'd be dumb to come back -- you just need one very mean defensive player who really likes his dogs, an harder-than-usual tackle, and Vick ends up in a wheelchair. I guess he made enough money already to retire comnfortably after his jail time is over (he's had to pay lawyers for a few months only, I don't think this has drained his resources.
a lot of white team owners who are probably going to think twice
yeah, I'm asure next time they see a big black dude who can make them a shitload of cash they'll be all like, NO WAIT HE MIGHT BE ANOTHER VICK. sure, it's a very un-greedy bunch. no matter what OJ did and what Vick did, black star athletes will always find professional sports teams and agents ready to exploit them. don't worry.
not only for millions of black kids and white kids and polka-dotted kids nationwide
then you might join a goodwill effort to explain to the kids you know that, first, torturing dogs is a crime, and second if one gets a rise out of watching that horror it means one has very deepseated problems -- it's pure sadism, and maybe -- just maybe -- it doesn't stop to animnals.
Do you even watch football, matteo? Black quarterbacks and black coaches have had a ridiculous hill to climb, far out of proportion to the contributions that black athletes in general have made to the game of football.
In 2005, one black quarterback, Donovan McNabb, was taken to task by an NAACP president for not running the ball enough, instead choosing to play the game like a white quarterback. This was two years after the same black quarterback had to hear Rush Limbaugh say on ESPN that he was an overrated quarterback because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady never have to deal with this shit. Mike Vick sure as hell did.
I hope Vick does join a goodwill effort to explain to kids why dogfighting is wrong. He could do more in one day than you or I could do in ten years to put a stop to this evil, cruel sport.
(and playing the race card and blaming fucking Rush Limbaugh here is beneath contempt -- Vick pled guilty after he got buried under an avalanche of evidence of brutality and savagery, period. race doesn't have dick to do with it, nor does Limbaugh, for once)
probably the best black quarterback ever to play the game
Um. He might be the best black *athlete* ever to take a snap on every play, but I think Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon would have something to say about this.
ikkyu, Vick isn't the best anything ever to play football. He may be one of the most exciting quarterback to watch, but he's been hurt way too often to leave any substantial mark on the game (check his stats). But what he's done hits people squarely in the gut (just look at the comments here). Even if someone is willing to risk the PR nightmare of signing Vick after he gets out, he'll be plagued by this the rest of his career. If people are throwing needles when Bonds hits, imagine what rival fans will do when Vick takes the field. I think he'd be better off just leaving the game. With all the talented quarterbacks coming up in the league (black and white), I don't think he'll be missed.
