17 August 2007

Today is my last day of work in the UK. [More:]In two weeks, we will be living in Texas. It's only now that I'm starting to realize that I'm going home. I've only been gone 3 years and 8 months, but what has changed? What kind of culture shock am I in for?
Should I prepare for it?
Heat. A friend of mine returned to Houston last year after three years over here (husband is with Exxon) and she said she'd forgotten just how mind-bakingly hot it is in TX.

Here's hoping you end up in Austin.

If not, condolences.

I will be in Austin, thankfully. I did 18 years in Houston, that was plenty.
I haven't forgotten about the heat, but I'm certainly not going to be prepared for it with this sorry excuse for a summer we've had here in the UK.

Medium Format: Profirios breakfast tacos. On Holly Street. Get the #1 with cheese, extra green sauce. Get an extra for me, please. Thanks.

Say hi to our mutual friend when you get to Austin.

Well, if you've ever spent time in Austin, one thing you might notice is how much bigger it's gotten, just in the past few years. This web site has a nice (scary) illustration of how the Austin skyline will change over the next couple years. Personally, I think the rapid and continuing expansion is hurting the city, destroying its quaintness, and killing a good part of what makes it unique -- dare I say Houstonizing it?

Still, it's a great place to live. As mudpuppie mentioned, there's the breakfast tacos (I highly recommend the veggie chorizo and egg taco at Curra's on Oltorf). For recreation, you have Zilker park, the hike and bike trails, Barton Springs, and a dozen other great swimming holes in and around the lake, along with some great places to camp just outside of town. If scenic beauty is what you're looking for, you have the greenbelt, the botanical and sculpture gardens, and the vast expanse of the central Texas hill country. And, of course, SXSW, Austin City Limits Fest, and all the live music you can shake a stick at.

Also, you might notice we've had a wee bit of rain this Summer. Everything's green!

I saw this post last night and all I could offer was my condolences so I kept on going.

I'm happy to know it's Austin you're landing in - Austin is the best of Texas.
