15 August 2007

I had a coworker a few years ago that loved to say "control z" rather than undo or do over. It was quite annoying. Almost as annoying as the guy that talked about switching between topics in a meeting as "alt-tab".

One time after blurting out something inappropriate in a conversation and silence fell, I said "Control Z! Control Z!" And everyone cracked up.

But yeah, over-using it would get old fast.

Someone at my office was telling me the story of her friend who was on the phone with a co-employee and while she was talking she kept hitting "3" to try and fast forward. She had forgotten she was no longer checking voicemail.
(In dorky advertising voice) Now there's a "Control Z" moment for ya! Someone's gonna use "Control Z" in a commercial soon and then we'll really hate it.

I'm going to start yelling "ALT PRINTSCREEN" from now on when I see something funny.

birdherder, I would punch someone who said "alt+tab" in a meeting. I don't attend a lot of meetings though.

Whenever there's a lull in a meeting, or conversation, I like to say, with childlike wonder, "I have my own watch!", which I totally copped from Sophie...she was prolly 4 1/2 at the time of course.

I've totally got to Ctrl-S this conversation. I'm gonna Ctrl-V it next geek I meet.

When i'm surrounded by four year olds, i like to insist on going over the Johnson memo. When they start to cry i say, "Cats got cute feet!"
After much nodding, it's nap time and so much for overseas conference calls. Young executives suck on video when cranky.

i was about to say what i say in a room full of geeks but i think i must kill seanyboy before he duplicates.

If you're in a room full of geeks and you want to address them all, I'd suggest starting with ...

"Ctrl-A ... "

I can imagine myself using that for lost things in my closet, seanyboy. I'd start with Ctrl-A, then Ctrl-F, then say "black silk cardigan" and lo! it would light up.

If you feel the need to repeat yourself, just CTRL-Y, man.

When I quit my current job, I plan on yelling "command-Q" and walking out the door.

Here's how real geeks do it (can you match them up?):

u
CTRL+w w
ggVG (there might be a shorter way to do this)
CTRL+r
:w
:q!

I have actually reached for the "u" key (Autocad shortcut: "undo") in RL. This is not an affectation, just a sign of too many hours in front of the computer.

Heh about the voicemail when you're just talking on the phone. I've tried to use 7 (from certain popular systems) to slow down somebody while I write something down.

Oh, and when it rains, I like to press Window Key + M to minimize them all.
