Anyone know of an online white noise generator? [More:]Here's what I'm after: I'd like to be able to have white noise running in the background while I work occasionally -- but rather than have to fire up iTunes or another program, I'd prefer to just find a website where a white noise generator quietly and effectively plays endlessly (or at least until I tell it to stop.)

Anyone know of such a thing?
Alternately, if none exist, what do you think the general interest in such a thing would be?

I read that there is one. I think it has something to do with pretending you're on an airplane. Have you started searching yet?

60 seconds of white noise

60 seconds of pink noise

I have these in my iTunes. Because I am weird.

I spose you could set these to repeat, over and over.

This is the closest I could find, but it doesn't work for me (slow connection, I think). Let me know if it works.

Daniel Charms, it works for me. I wasn't getting any sounds, but then saw that I had to adjust the volume-slider thingies. Bookmarked! Thanks!

Daniel Charms, that's pretty good -- I like the fact that you can select various sound effects and double them up, adjust relative volume, etc. Thanks for the link!

Miko: yes, I tried searching, including the search you suggested. Not much actually online in the results. And putting it into quotes didn't help -- although this thread already shows up, half an hour after it was posted! Damn, Google, you're quick!

Here's a Pure White Noise CD.
Also, TVs are white noise generators.
Also, if I may, try a Robert Rich CD.
I realize none of these answer your actual question, because that would be boring.

me3dia: I got five hits, two of them to a forum post asking for the same exact thing and two to del.icio.us, which is where I found that link.

And now it works for me, too.

thanks for that link, DC. I think I'll be using that in more stressful work moments.

How about Serenity - a lot of "Sound Environments" to choose from, White Noise at the bottom, streaming online?

TVs are white noise generators.

And then there's a radio tuned between stations...

I'm really enjoying the one Daniel linked to. Well, except the birdsong has Kaylee barking. Nice going, mutt.

I once read a Sci-Fi short story about adjusting personality traits basied on frequencies. So they'd tie a certain stimulus to 60Hz, which is the most common freq for white noise, and since you're almost always exposed to it, a schizophrenic would trend to the normal. I thought it was ingenious. Sorry that's not any help, but the question reminded me of the story.
