Watch Lust. Why do I have it? I drive a 15 year old car fer chrissakes, so why should I desire an elegant, snazzy, expensive new watch? My precious....
You gots ta reprazent.

I don't know. I do know that when I came down with this bug, I was eventually able to cure it, but boy was the cure ever not cheap.

Rolexes are too ostentatious. Tag Heuer's are like BMWs. Those Omega Seamasters call to me like sirens from the deep, however. Hmmmm.

Do you think you'd be satisfied with a Black Monster or an Invicta or something along those lines? Probably not, I suppose.

Yeah, I could be. There's a Swiss Army for example that's just beautiful, and is hundreds less than those 'other' brands. I could be satisfied with that. I think. ;)

Yeah, but it just wouldn't be the same.

Whether you'd be satisfied depends, I think, on what you're using the watch for, or how you feel about it, or your relationship to it, or maybe all three--something like that, anyway. (To my ears, that sentence sounds an awful lot like ad copy. You may be interested to know that I don't wear a watch these days.)

So, what's the watch equivalent of your 15 year old car?

I don't wear one. There's a clock on my computer screen, in my car, and on my mobile phone. I'm never out of range of a clock, so I just don't see the need. Plus, I can't be bothered.

I don't wear any jewelry at all (not even a wedding ring), either. *shrug*

I like to go au naturelle.

A very good question. I have a Timex that has been running strong for about 7 years now, without once having to change the battery. I love that watch, and it only cost about $60. It's my camping, vacation, everyday watch.

And Chuck's implication is right: watches are jewelery. We're surrounded by time-telling devices, and there's just no need to wear a watch.

But I likes ta reprazent.

Nothing like haute horlogerie.

My dad always wanted a Rolex, and could afford one, no problem, but was far too modest to buy one. For his 62nd birthday, my mom took him to a jewelry store and “made” him get one for himself. It wasn’t the fanciest one, but even an un-fancy Rolex is pricey, to say the least.

He died about a year and a half later. My mom is still very much alive, so there wasn’t any real distribution of his assets, but Mom decided that my brother and I should get his car and his watch. We sold the car and split the money, but my brother wanted us to sort of time-share the watch, him wearing it one year, me the next. However, a Rolex really isn’t my style—the only jewelry I wear is my wedding ring (and, I suppose, my Montblanc pen), and my neighborhood is such that I get nervous when I carry around more than $50. Plus, it’s not like Dad had the watch forever, so I didn’t have any real sentimental attachment to it.

I decided to just let my brother have it. He insisted that I get first pick of something of equal value from Mom’s eventual estate. It was an easy choice for me. For dad’s 60th, he’d gotten himself a suit of armor, a genuine one from Spain, fully articulated and wearable. That, oh, yes, that, is my style! So I have that coming to me at some point.

Because you're worth it, damnit.

I drive my boyfriend's 15-year-old car, and have never worn jewellery, but my acquisitiveness expresses itself in the form of gadgets, particularly computer components and my lovely new Thinkpad T60... most of us have it, to an extent, I reckon.

My gadget lust has been low of late. I wonder if it correlates to my newfound watch lust?
