I stink! But in a good way. [More:] Famous-Indie-Bookstore-that-rhymes-with-one-man-band is poorly air conditioned and I've been working my tail off hauling boxes, climbing ladders and the like (I straightened out Egypt and Africa today), so I sweat a lot. My calves are stiff and the soles of my feet are callused. After 4 years at a desk and four years before that doing sales, I forgotten what a nice sensation being physically spent after a day's work is. They also have had me working directly with the store's owner and the other managers quite a bit for the past few days, which I'm told is a big vote of confidence.
There is an enormous satisfaction in doing a good job of physical work. I never like the good boy praise part from the bosses, but busting your ass because you told yourself you were going to do it is a tonic. I'm very glad you're happy.

I never like the good boy praise part from the bosses,

It wasn't. When I came in, I asked my manager where to go and she said to go to the history section, but said "They may call you up front [to help unload books that people are selling us], they seem to like you up there since they like dealing with people with half a brain."

and I definitely have that.

No, I'm sorry, I was referring to my own experience, just the difference between the feeling that you are earning your keep and applying yourself and the kinda weird itchy feeling when someone you shouldn't be beholden too tells you that you are doing a good job, I always want to say "Yeah I'm doing a fucking good job, I decided to do a good job."

I can be a balky mule is all.

I was envying you that new job, hard work feeling.

Look who you're talking to, dude. I hate patronizing praise, too, but I alaso value clear feedback since I don't like being blindsided with a 'you suck.'

If you go have a regular steam bath you won't stink very much when you sweat. A good steam will loosen all the built-up gunk and bacteria in your pores that mix with sweat and normal body scent to produce the more sinister BO. Give it a try! You can even skip deodorant for a few days after a steam bath or sauna.

Jon and I share the opinion (I think) that a good stink is a mark of quality living and not to be soon removed without due consideration.

Really, honestly, there are few pleasures in life to match the moment of kicking back after a day of hard physical labor, sweaty, achey, but with a modest and gratifying sense of stuff accomplished, and the feeling that one has well and truly earned the cold beer cracked open and poured down the throat, the long stretch and deep sigh, and the anticipation of the cool shower and clean sheets and long deep restorative sleep.

Very glad to hear the new job is working out well so far, Jon!

Well said Kat. There's nothing like a hard day of productive work. It's good for the soul.

Glad things are working out for you Jon. I'm sure you're an asset to the store.

Clean swest is ok...but not if it's been brewing for a few days. FWIW, the woman who originally ran the Gotham Book Mart was a friend of my grandfahter's.

I'm glad to hear the job's going well. And if you're at all concerned about the sweat effect, Mitchum unscented is the only thing you need.

...a regular steam bath...

Shall I meet you at the club, dear, or just start running the shower? ; )

(A good stink is a sexy thing.)
