So a painting question I just painted my bathroom white. There's a chair-rail like bit of molding I want to do in blue.

At what point would it be OK to tape over the fresh paint? Next day? A couple days?
Is this acrylic paint and what finish?

You can get special low-tack masking tape for just this purpose. It's not cheap, but it's worth it not to have to paint the wall again. Make sure you press it down carefully at the edges because, being low-tack, it doesn't stick as well as the normal stuff. There are various "grades" of low-tack and your helpful hardware person should be able to assist you - if not, shop somewhere else.

I would not tape over fresh paint with normal masking tape for at least two weeks, if not longer.

Keep in mind that it's likely going to be more humid in the bathroom than in other rooms as well and that is going to affect drying time. I'd wait until next weekend OR I would pop the wood off the wall and paint it elsewhere.

I used the special low tack one DG mentioned 24 hours after and only had two little tiny flakes/spots to re-touche.

I would not use the normal stuff for at least a week and even then make sure you don't leave it on too long.

Can you get some of that tile paint or enamel or those stick on jewels for TARDIS buttons?

OH no, I have painter's tape, not normal. I wouldn't even chance normal tape yet!
The paint's a latex enamel self-priming sort, specifically made for kitchens and baths (IE waterproof).
It was dry to the touch within an hour.

eth, AWESOME idea. I'm also planning to get glass paint and freehand the front of the TARDIS onto the shower doors. We saw some little Dalek and Cyberman mini cookie jars on ebay, I think they'd be great for like cotton balls and q-tips. Also getting this which, while not being a Doctor Who specific toy, has a certain sci-fi kind of charm. (and we figured it would serve as a "didn't wash hands" siren for guests. If they don't comment, well, clearly they didn't turn on the water!)

Do you need to tape it? If you use an angle brush, don't overload the brush, and are careful, you shouldn't need to tape if the wall is semi or glossier. You're almost certain to make a wee booboo here and there, but quick application of a rag will eliminate it. And in general, being careful is quicker and has better results than relying on tape.

NB: Do not look at our ceilings for evidence of this. Our excuse is that we were going to do them again anyway.

If there is a "clean" corner between the wall and molding, i would just get a good angle trim brush (pay the extra money) and cut it in my hand. Does not take long to get the knack of, and any boo boos can be cleaned up with coming back and touching up with the original body paint.

what xeno said.

the molding is only about half an inch wide, and not very high, so I don't really trust myself to get that close with an angled brush.

There are "portable" masks you can get at the hardware store. They've got a handle and a straight edge that you hold against the wall where it meets the trim. Paint a bit, then you move it. As long as you don't paint beyond the mask, you'll be just fine.

What everyone else said about painting...

and, I WANT THE FAUCET LED!... must have it.

I love people that find all this neat stuff and share it with us.
