28 July 2007

I have been a busy bunny It seems like a million things always happen at once.[More:]

As I posted a bit ago, I did get the new job, and started this week. Which is awesome. I've only been at it for a week, but I already think I'll like it a lot.

And, I'm feeling a bit old, as my 28th birthday hit the same day as the invitation for my ten year reunion. Yeah, yeah... Adding to that the fact that someone apparently replaced my regular coffee with Folgers Old Man Catnip instead, which means that whenever I leave the house any cute tattooed boys my age ignore me, and guys old enough to be my dad follow me like I'm some demented Pied Piper.

Oh, and tomorrow I'm painting the bathroom in the afternoon and seeing the Simpsons movie in the evening. I convinced my landlord to let me take the materials off the rent, which she was initially against (against the painting completely, actually), until I mentioned the "pros" she hired never bothered to prime, and we now had mildew growing under the cracked ceiling paint and high gloss latex peeling off high gloss latex on the walls.

Oh, it'll be white, blue trim. Theme: Doctor Who. :D

And my sister's wedding is in a month. She's gone a bit bridezilla. I'm actually pretty scared.

So what have you all been up to?
I have learned that giving a 19-year-old cat subcutaneous fluids on a daily basis is hard on everyone involved.

That aside, in just about an hour I'll be on vacation for a week. We'll spend the first part of the week doing some day hikes in the Cascades, and then next weekend we head over to Hood Canal and some hiking in the Olympics.

oooh... poor kitty. I can't even get mine to let me trim her claws, so I can't even imagine. I just figured a nineteen year old would be more docile than a two year old.

He's old and feisty. It seems as if he might be resigning himself to the situation, but he still managed to wiggle around enough today for us to cut the drip short lest he pull the needle out, or worse.

I got the willies just typing that. If there's one thing that freaks me out more than spiders, it's needles.

bmarkey, I hope the kitty is OK. That kind of thing does suck.

Well, he's had kidney disease for some time now. when we had a hot spell last week, he went into a bit of a fugue and basically stopped eating and drinking, or anything else other than sleeping. This sent his kidney levels really high, so he spent last weekend at the vet's - IV and subcutaneous fluids, the whole works.

Since he's been home he's been more normal. He's eating like a champ, although he still sleeps a lot. We're supposed to get the latest test results back tomorrow; hopefully his creatinine hasn't gone back up. He's never going to have normal levels again, but we're hoping for a lower high, if you follow me.

Sorry for the derail, kellydamnit.

bmarkey, "19-year-old cat" is way cool. I wish him and you well. And yes, "Sorry for the derail, kellydamnit."

Thanks. I'll pass it on.

So what have you all been up to?

Just got myself out of a minorly-major depression cycle by looking up Cyclothymia on the web and finding out that I’m not the only one suffering from it. God it helps to know that you’re not alone in the world. Got myself out of bed early today morning, took a nice warm bath, changed the sheets, and have dressed myself neatly. It feels good.:)

Since I returned from NYC I've been trying hard to lose weight and get fit. I've had no problems with the food aspect, but exercise - or rather the motivation to do it - is more difficult. But with my new kettlebells I have fresh motivation because the workouts are short, 15-20 minutes, but very, very intense.

My social life is boring, largely because I'm trying to save some money, as well as being in the midst of the financial obligations I took on for my sister (one more month's payment for her car, and then that's it). But I think I'll see The Simpsons movie this weekend.

Work is going ok, although the percentage of nutcases and idiots whose files land on my desk is increasing week by week.

bmarkey : my last tomcat Ricky was just short of his 20th birthday when he died. He was the most interesting cat I've ever owned. Old cats rock. But it is hard when their health starts to fail and you try to do the best for them, without really knowing if you're helping or not.

no derail, so no need to apologize... I haven't been reading as much as I'd like to, so I wanted to catch up with everyone.
Although sick kitty stories always break my heart. I'm glad yours seems to be in better shape now.

And EJ, that is the pickle about old cats. If it was a person they'd understand why they need the shots or whatever. The kitty just knows it sucks and doesn't know why it's happening. I'd like to think they can connect shots to feeling better, but my cat can't even figure out that guarding her food dish from me means I can't fill it, so who knows.
They do surprise you, though. Nothing in the world like when you're feeling down, or sick, and just sitting on the couch or whatever, and somehow the cat just knows you're not up to par, comes over, and lays on your lap or licks your arm or something to make you happy. Cats are great like that.

Unless, of course, the cat is Oscar. Then you're screwed.

wishes for bmarkey's kitty. And hugs to hadjiboy, don't let the minorly-majorly keep ya away from us.

kelly: did you get your dress for the sister's wedding? Your shoes, did you decide on hairdo, nails, makeup? What, no hat? Summer wedding without a hat? I am kidding, of course.

I've been up the usual (tree). Which is work and kids. Thankfully work is taking me to nice places once in a while, like Cape Cod this past week and the awesomeness that spells out WHOI. Have not seen a movie or gone out for like ages. And most of my real life friends are vacationing somewhere. Office looks like the desert, the Saharan desert.

Just chiming in about Oscar, and cats in general. I think Oscar rocks. He isn't scary, he has a sense, and lends comfort when it's needed. He's exceptional.

My cat is not exceptional. He is old (14 - 17 - exact age unknown). He tries hard, but a cat shouldn't have to try that hard. We moved his litter box three feet, and he goes to the old spot, finds the new spot, pees, then goes out again to the old spot, re-finds the new spot, and poos. Bless his walnut brain for eliminating right. He is not affectionate, never has been. He's food addicted and fat. Still, he's part of the household, and it'll be hard to let him go when the time comes.

kellydamnit, I thought you were older. I guess because you've been through lots of stuff, which you've shared over the years (?!) Two years? Two and a half? Feels like forever. Anyway, feel young, because you'll never be this young again!

Maybe that wasn't an entirely appropriate sentiment. Just know that there are people out there on the internets who take an interest in your well-being.

Thank you, rainbaby.
I think part of my problem is that I do feel young. When I think of myself and my friends of the same age I mentally see us as "college aged." Which really isn't the case. All of our parents were married when they were our ages. In most cases, with us already existing.

But, I don't think that life is ever going to be for me, and I'm content with where I am now. I have a good job, I love my apartment, all that jazz.

And hooray for fat cats! Mia's packed on a ton since joining our household. I think, because her last home had many animals, she was forcing herself to eat whenever food was out (since before, if she didn't, someone else would get to it, and she was the most submissive of the pack). She was eating all day, every day, and because neither of us realized it, we were both filling her dish. So she went from an tiny 8 pound six month old to the big fifteen pound two year old we have today. (I know, not too heavy for a cat, but she has a tiny frame, and her little belly sways when she runs).
She's on a diet, though. Seems to be helping. Although she won't have her "fuzzy hot water bottle" quality anymore.

Bailey has a baggy belly too, and Lucy ended up a bit chubbier than she should be, so they're on Hill's Science Lite now, just a cup in the morning and one in the evening, unless I'm away, when their dish is always topped up by neighbours.

This weekend has been fairly boring. Tomorrow I help a friend move (was supposed to be today but the house remodeling wasn't quite ready.)

Husband was in a very stressed mood, so I stayed out of his face much of the day. The good thing is I went to a thrift store and found a really cool ladybug platter for fifty cents. (original price tag 20 bucks!) The Grandbun's mom (my daughter) collects ladybug stuff so it'll go to her. She's thrilled.

Now, husband went to wherever it was he had to go this evening and I have the house to myself (other daughter is at work. ) I think I'll try to make pesto for the First Time Ever. I have tons of homegrown basil, and I picked up the other stuff I needed at the store. So, that will be good.
posted by bunnyfire 28 July | 16:15
Pesto is an awesome, awesome thing to make. it's so shockingly easy, and if you grow basil it's next to free compared to the teeny jars they charge a fortune for in the shop!
