Musical bunnies! Recommend me some songs for a road trip![More:]

In three weeks, I'm going to be loading up my car, pointing it west, and heading on out to Seattle, via 94/90 -- the Fargo-Billings-Missoula-Coeur d'Alene run. Experience tells me there is very little in the way of good radio on this route, so I'm planning to assemble and burn some CD mixes that will help me make it through the miles, and also perhaps expand my (woefully limited) musical horizons.

What I'm particularly looking for are:

a) upbeat zoomy freeway-motoring songs, the kind of thing that makes you bounce in your seat and bang on the steering wheel and sing along off-key;

b) songs that reflect the theme of new beginnings, massive life upheaval, running away to seek one's fortune, cutting loose from the past, TEOTWAWKI, etc.;

c) trancey spacious music for driving across the Great Plains and reflecting on the transitoriness of life and the vastness of the cosmos.

All suggestions welcome!
a) Motown, and similar. Some representative examples:
Junior Walker and the All-Stars - Shotgun
Martha and the Vandellas - Heatwave
Marvin Gaye - Ain't That Peculiar

b) Other people can probably do better with this one than I can, but here are a few hip-hop songs along those lines:
Mathematik f Bahamadia - Following Goals
Wisdom Life f a bunch of collaborators - Fruits of Labor
Blackalicious - Making Progress

c) Dub reggae, free jazz (esp. large groups), electronic music. These are albums, not songs:
Bill Laswell - Dub Chamber 4
Niney the Observer - Space Flight Dub
Luther Thomas and the Human Arts Ensemble - Funky Donkey
The Little Huey Creative Music Ensemble - Raincoat in the River
Amon Tobin - Supermodified
Nightmares on Wax - In A Space Outta Sound

I'll happily be more specific and rambly, if any of those areas sound like something you might like.

I like to pound my steering wheel to "American Girl" by Tom Petty. Then I remember I do that because the girl in Silence of the Lambs does it right before she gets abducted and thrown in a pit by Buffalo Bill. Then I get kinda creeped out.

America by Simon and Garfunkel is both about travel and discontent "I'm empty and aching and I DON'T KNOW WHY....counting the cars on the New Jersey turnpike they've all gone to look for Ameeeerrriccaaa..."
