The Muppet Show: Who was your favorite? Who do you identify with today? [More:]

As a kid, I was an Animal fan. I still have a bit of Animal in me, and a bit of Statler and Waldorlf, too. But now, I really identify with Kermit. That's unusual, that I now identify with the main dude, maybe he was the adult figure, he tried to hold it all together, tried to get out his art, which though sincere and earnest, and the best he could do, was FUNNY, which is great.

I think most of us must be familiar with the Muppet Show, either grew up with it from any age from five-ish to fifteen-ish, or saw it in re-runs?

Hmm?
I ALWAYS identified with Kermit. While I was growing up I always felt like I was the one keeping my parents and my brother from all three killing each other, so it makes sense.

I've always felt some kinship to Kermit, but I've always identified a bit more with Gonzo. First Gonzo, then Kermit, then Lou Zealand. With the boomerang fish. He always struck a bit of a chord with me.

There was something about having that skill about which nobody really cared, that was the thing with Lew Zealand. (Sorry, I hadn't previously realised I'd misspelled his name.)

Aiming for Rowlf, but generally Scooter. That probably sums it up well enough.

Before Sesame Street and the Muppet Show, my parents let me stay up past 9PM to watch Rowlf, the piano playing dog, trade repartee with Jimmy (not yet a sausage king) Dean. I owned a Rowlf puppet. As far as I'm concerned, he got a raw deal on the Show, dumped down to 7th billing behind the Swedish Chef.

equal parts Rowlf and Kermit

As a child, I could only aspire to the fabulousness that is Miss Piggy. I don't know who I'd relate to now.

I had a Rowlf puppet too!

Animal was always my favorite. Now that I think about it, I guess he still is...

I can't even remember anyone except Miss Piggy and Kermit.

Sam the Eagle. You are all weirdos.

I didn't watch the muppet show.

Iknew a guy in high school who was a dead ringer for Zoot:

Except for being blue and stuff, so that became his nickname, and he was in a band, too. He played guitar, though.

I did a good imitation of Beaker.

Waldorf and/or Statler
posted by chuckdarwin 22 July | 08:47
Actually Waldorf, Statler and Sam the Eagle were wonderful for their grumpiness. Livened up things.
posted by jouke 22 July | 09:04
I always identified with Beaker.
posted by gaspode 22 July | 10:06
Totally Animal. And, on my worse days, a little Beaker. I wish I could sing like Floyd though.

(Mixing up Sesame Street and Muppet Show muppets, because that's what I did as a child)

When I was a little kid, I identified with Grover--then, when I was a little older, with Statler and Waldorf. And, a little older yet, with Roosevelt Franklin. These days, though, it's all Kermit. The Everyman, trying to bring just a little bit of order to chaos.

Beaker, definitely, and sometimes Janice. I can still do a good Swedish Chef impression to this day. I get kids to howl when I chuck my cutlery over my shoulder, inspiring them to do the same.

As a kid I think I wanted to be aligned with Animal - that was who I listed as my favorite Muppet when I joined the Muppet fan club (and got an "autographed" 8x10 of Animal). But really, I think at the time I'd say I was more like Fozzie Bear - always trying too hard to make people laugh and be liked. But now I'd have to go with Waldorf and Statler - cynical but still able to enjoy even the most miserable of situations.

I wrote short story a while ago.

"Rolph the dog." "Seriously? The piano player?" "Yeah, totally"

It was going great so far, before the food came we had full acknowledgement of the absurdity of blind date conversation, by mid meal we were trashing mutual friends, and by dessert we were making up first date questions. She came up with "which muppet would you like to be?" This is of course a very different question than "Who is your favourite muppet?" (Me: Beaker, her: Sam the Eagle) and "If you were a muppet, which muppet would you be?" (Her: Scooter, me: Fozzie).

"What about you?" "Janice, from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem" "Why?" "I always liked her hair, and she played guitar, seriously though, Rolph? Why Rolph?" "Rolph is cool, he's got skills, he could work any theater in New York, but out of loyalty to the troupe, he sticks with the muppets. All the other muppets have all kinds of problems, Kermit's gotta run this money loosing show, book guests all that, Miss Piggy's got that unrequited frog-love going on, Gonzo's in love with a chicken, Fozzie's terrible at the only job he's ever wanted, but not Rolph, he just floats through, singing his songs and playing the piano. He's the Sam to Kermit's Rick Blane, grand events happen around him, but not to him"

"Do you think Rolph's black?" "He's brown" "Yeah, but you said he was like Sam, if Rolph was a person, do you think he'd be black?" "If a muppet dog was a real person, would he be black, this is what you're asking me?" "shut-up!" "well, let me think, most of the muppets are pretty clearly Jewish, Gonzo and Miss Piggy and Stadtler and Waldorf, Fozzie and Beaker, them for sure. Kermit's from middle America, but moved to the big city as a kid... so he's whitebread..." "In the Muppets Take Manhattan, Kermit's from..." "Excuse me, I'm just talking about The Muppet Show here, not the expanded universe" "Oh my God, did you just use the phrase 'expanded universe' in reference to the muppet show" "Hey, I wasn't going to say anything, but when I picked you up, I saw those Dragon Lance novels hidden on the top shelf" "We shall speak no more of this!"

This I like, a girl nerdy enough to hold on to her geeky past, but self aware enough to feign embarassment. For this to get any better she'd have to tell me that she really liked dressing up as Emma Peel in private.

"So Rolph's black and Gonzo's Jewish?" "I believe we've established that, yes" "I guess that's why you're not supposed to like them" "What?" "Well, I mean, it's pretty obvious that the whole show is an indictment of the Jewish takeover of the entertainment industry post-war" "Ha, yeah" "No, look at the facts, you've got Sam The American Eagle there trying to stand up for decency, and he's counfounded at every turn by these hippies and Jews, who use the negro as their tool. And the audience, who represents the American people, they hate it, they're always jeering, but they've got nothing else to watch. It's all right there" "How's your cheesecake?" "Look, I'm no Hitler appologist, but you have to admit, it's pretty obvious that there's been a concerted effort by certian malcontent elements to undermine the true American race almost since before confederation, look, have you ever read anything by Ernst Zundle?"

It was going so well too.

I'm not sure if he was on the Muppet Show or just Sesame Street, but I am definitely an Oscar (the grouch, not the statue).
posted by dg 22 July | 16:10
I love Oscar. Jon gave me a stuffed Oscar, complete with trash can, for my birthday.

Crazy Harry, aka the "mad bomber," was always my favorite on the Muppets.

That was awesome, Capn.

I'm wearing my Beaker and Bunsen Honeydew shirt right this very minute. They're holding up test tubes and it says "Bottoms Up!"

I was a big Miss Piggy fan back in the day, though. She was fabulous and could do karate.

Capn, her last name wasn't Coulter, by any chance?

Ernie, because he's so awesome, and Prairie Dawn, cause the name cracks me up.

I never liked the Muppet Show, but I always admired Guy Smiley on Sesame Street.
