19 July 2007

I need whuffles, and my son really needs them. [More:] He was messing with the radio in the car. When he looked down, the light was green; when he looked up it was red and traffic was coming through. He missed the first SUV but T-boned the second. He's okay, but his car is totaled, and probably the SUV he hit (it rolled). The couple in the other car were taken to the hospital but my son said they were up and walking around.

This is his second total in three years. Ugh. And no collision insurance on his car this time.
Sorry about the pic quality; I didn't realize my phone was set to low resolution.

I had two wrecks when I was a teen, both my fault. The good news is that I have had none since and I am on OBSCENELY careful driver now.

So there is hope, even if that next little while will suck.

Hugs, and unconditional love, to your son, but I am sure he's getting a lot of that from you.

It sounds like everyone is OK.

Once in my early twenties while perusing a cookbook at a stoplight I rammed my Plymouth Valari into the back of an anesthesiologist's brand new pick-up truck.

I was also T-boned by a woman exiting a 55 and older retirement community. The SUV I was driving flipped four times across a five lane highway. I wasn't angry in the least. I was thrilled beyond words that my baby and I were alive, and that our car didn't hit anyone during the rolling process. I'm betting the people your son hit are happy to be OK too.

Things happen. All will be well.

Wow. I'm so glad it seems like there are so serious injuries. Lots of whuffles.

Oh, man. What a rough experience for all involved (that includes you). Hugs to you and your son, both!

Yikes. Glad everyone seems okay. You're taking this rather calmly. My father would've flipped. (He didn't even let me get my license until I was 19, and I didn't have my own car until after college, which he did generously buy for me as a graduation present; he wasn't all bad.)

I seemed to have a thing for parked cars in my early days of driving. It's amazing how easy a nonmoving target is to hit.

Yikes. Hoping the biggest injuries are only mental ones that lead to carefulness from now on.

Oh man. Glad everyone is alright. How terrifying. Get him one of those cars where the radio controls are on the steering wheel, OK?

Glad that everyone's OK. My son wrecked my wife's car a couple of months ago. He was at a stop sign in what he thought was a four-way intersection but it was only a two-way. So he stopped, saw that no one was in the intersection and then went through it without looking up the road. A car came flying along and took out the front end. I'm not really sure when I'm going to let him drive again since we're now down to one car and I can't risk him driving that.

Sorry for your son's difficulties, Doohickie. Good on you for not going off on the boy, after a second total in 3 years. His insurance rates are going to be brutal, but if he pays them himself, there is nothing more likely to keep his attention focused behind the wheel. My youngest son had $3,800 a year premiums for several years in his early twenties, thanks to his lead foot, and his lack of concentration, but when he started paying his own premiums, he got to be a much more conservative driver. And one year, when he couldn't afford a car and insurance, he got to put his environmental chops to work hoofing it. Didn't kill him, but it cramped his style a lot more than he wanted to admit. And he found out that his friends with rides weren't taxi drivers.

Eeee! I'm glad he's ok...car radios should be made with as few bells and whistles as possible.

We just got back from the hospital. After the shock wore off and the knee swelled up, he realized it hurt quite a bit.

Luckily, just a bruise, no serious damage.

He opened up a lot while we were waiting at the hospital though, giving me all the details of the accident. The thing I marvel at is that not only did the airbag prevent serious injury, but he said he felt no pain whatsoever in his head, chest, back, etc., which surprised him.

With the perspective of a few hours, I can be a little more philosophical. After talking to him, I think the people in the other car are probably fine. He's okay too, although he's pretty mad at himself right now. But basically no one was badly hurt; it's just gonna be money out of our pockets. It sucks but we've been through worse. I hope he puts the experience gained to good use down the road.
