Plz vet my new comic thing because I'm just about ready to launch it and I want to know if anything is missing or broken or wrong. I kiss you.
And no "hurf durf you forgot the jokes" sass. I know you want to, and I respect that, but that "I kiss you" isn't unconditional, bucko.
Seriously, on the one hand it's just another random project, but on the other I feel kind of good about the idea and miss having a really regular project project like the Aural Times, and I want to knock this fucker out of the park insofar as I am able.
That's the challenge. It is almost entirely not baseball humor; it just has baseball cards for characters. This fundamental thesis may be its own arch-nemesis.
I don't get it, so I'll criticise the look instead. Rockwell is great for the logo, but how about a different font for the comics? The leading on panel 3 of the most recent one is waaaay too tight - but equally Rockwell with looser leading would look odd on a comic. So I would have a look at some other fonts for the comics themselves.
The small text (e.g. panel 2, most recent) is either too small or too smoothly anti-aliased to be comfortably readable.
Also, in my humble opinion, italicised Rockwell never looks good, so how about something else to differentiate the comic taglines, like small caps or something?
Yeah, I'm curious what'll happen with the Project Wonderful stuff once I try and drive some traffic to the site. I might make all of $0.10 a day off it, but that's about what Adsense does on idle so, you know, hey.
Content looks good but it doesn't work for me unless I kill the ad blocker, McAfee and set Internet security to zero. So if I didn't know who you are I would never see it.
You have been officially bookmarked in my "Check Daily: Comics" folder, after A Softer World (I felt they were similar in execution) and before White Ninja Comics. Congrats.
Ha! Thanks, CF. Yeah, White Ninja is one of my great loves of webcomickry. I'm always linking a strip here or there to friends and getting blank stares back, so I figure there's a lot of only partially-overlapping sets of preferences out there.
And yeah, matthewr, I can see where you're coming from with the font issue. I have to admit there's a sliver of love for Pokey the Penguin that's driving a bit of deliberate Bad Design Decision influence into this first take, but I'll see what happens after a couple months—I've repented awkward choices before, and if I keep at this I'll probably do so again.
a) pretty - I like the font in the comics
b) Do you take suggestions for baseball players to use?
c) could you do a football (soccer) version? I have a list of very cute players you could use.
Works for me here at the office - and we have AVG, Symantec, Spybot, ad-aware, & Spyware Blaster running on winXP system w/I-explorer. That's as much as I know about the computers...(guess there's a lot of "security" on them!?)
I "get" some of the comics even, and find the "asides/extras" below most entertaining, so overall a positve.
b) I'm not against it, though really i. I know jack about baseball and ii. my basic MO is "look through my old baseball cards for funny pictures", so short of mailing me a specific card it's probably not that practical.
c) I'll probably introduce some cross-sports/cross-genre cards for shits and giggles. See above.

I suppose yeah; I hadn't thought about Get Your War On, but it's the same sort of found-art spirit. I think the biggest influence is max cannon's Red Meat, actually.
Ha! Your project brought back memories of the summer I decided to become a serious baseball card collector (a career that lasted all of four months). My proudest acquisition was the Ken Griffey, Jr. Upper Deck rookie card -- an item that shot up in value after his first couple seasons, when everyone thought he would be the savior of baseball. I still remember how excited I got when I checked the Beckett guide and saw that sucker priced at sixty bucks (and climbing)! We'd all heard about the Honus Wagner card that had recently sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars -- surely a mass-produced Ken Griffey, Jr. would someday (perhaps after shattering Hank Aaron's homerun record by the age of thirty?) be worth twice that amount!
Needless to say, many injury-plagued, mediocre seasons later, the card's value has plummetted, dashing my boyhood dreams of a life of luxury and ease. Meanwhile, a balloon-headed roid freak is set to break the homerun record wide open. (And back in the day I probably traded my best Barry Bonds card for a 3-D Cecil Fielder, or some shit.)
