New York Metro Bunnies, WCBS-FM, which for decades was the greatest oldies station in New York, before being turned into an 'alternative' station 2 years ago, is BACK to the oldies. As someone who grew up listening to this station, I'm thrilled. Sadly, the legendary Cousin Brucie is not among the returning DJ's.
I join jonmc in his estimation that this is awesome news.

I owe my repertoire of novelty and bubble-gum hits of the 50s and 60s to this station. This station has made me a better woman and a better trivia contestant. It is also the first frequency over which my voice was ever broadcast on the air (when I called in to answer some contest when I was 12). Welcome back CBS-FM!

Awesome. They have a live stream. I'm listening to Mr Tambourine Man right now. So this is news for all, not just for youse guys in NY.

And now Brick House by The Commodores.... hah. I think I'll listen to this the rest of the day.

and doo-wop, and rockabilly, and Motown and Stax/Volt and all the other stuff that you don't hear on the more modern stations but is an essential part of any well-rounded musical diet, especially for the historically minded. And this was no cookie cutter station, some of the jocks like Dan Ingram and the aforemntioned Cousin Brucie go back to rock and roll's beginnings. It was a big part of my musical education.

Wait, so Jack isn't an oldies format? Because I was kinda under the impression that it's oldies for Gen-X'ers, and that the freeform-lite thing was just a gimmick/marketing hook/way-to-make-a-tortured-iPod-metaphor. I could be wrong about that, though.

I guess that's true, jonmc. They did play immense Motown, Stax, and Philly stuff. I probably didn't have it in perspective while I was listening to it. Do I know Standing in the Shadows or of Love only because of 'CBS? What are some other tracks that most oldies stations consider obscure?

Hey, you can listen online! And I am!

Saaaaturday, in the park! I think it was the 4th of Julllly.....

I remember when oldies meant music from the 50s. What are those called now? And the oldies of the future will be Nirvana and such, so what will the '64-'85 oldies be called then? It's all so confusing.

And what's this guy's problem anyway? It's not like Independence Day is just another day, it happens to mark the birth of a nation. The nation which contains Chicago, the city and the band. You don't hear me sayin' "Went to visit my parents, I think it was Thanksgiving", do ya? I mean really, WTF Cetera! Pour some gravy on it, will ya?!
Enough of my jibber-jabber, It's quarter to three on this hot sunny Thursday (sound effect of egg sizzling), let's get back to the tooooones...

This broadcast slows my computer down so that it's useless for the important financial work I should be working on. Awesome!

You have a better computer than me. It actually ground mine to a halt, preventing me from wasting valuable time on other websites. Damn!

Miko, that's hilarious. (poor Dick Clark)

Cousin Brucie's contract with Sirius runs out next year, so he may still return to 101.1.

I bet he will.

I really can't listen because the stream is so draining....are they still using insane amounts of reverb on the DJ's voice?
posted by Miko 12 July | 16:51
I love all that reverb and the old-school patter.

I was psyched at the news, so I just started streaming the station -- only to hear "Big Shot." Come on, now. If I'm listening to an oldies station, it's because I want the Everly Brothers, not Billy Joel.

I wonder if they're going to keep up the Saturday Night Oldies program, with the '60s-'70s jingles and ads -- I hope so!

Hell, I already consider Nirvana as oldies.

Big Shot? That doesn't sound promising.
