Honest Ed is dead. Discount retailer, and lover of the theater, Edwin Mirvish is dead just shy of his 93rd birthday.
I saw this earlier today...just a quick glimpse of an old black and white photo of a man that I recognized to be him before alt-tabbing from that to another application, and I immediately thought that it might be bad news...don't know why...so I switched back and the headline read that he'd died. I don't have any memories of shopping at Honest Ed's as a kid, but I do remember dining at least once at his restaurant on King(?) and seeing many of his theatre productions. He was such a generous human being and did so much for his community.

RIP, Honest Ed.

Oh my.

Going in Honest Ed's was pretty stressful, but walking past it was always a hoot. I lived in the neighbourhood for about three years, I guess.

If there's a heaven, I hope it says COME IN YOU LUCKY PEOPLE.

As a kid I always loved Honest Ed's ads in the Toronto Star. A full page of tightly packed little pictures and small text and crazy sayings. He was an original.

Sad. I went to Honest Ed's when I was in Toronto and thought it was lots of fun. He sounds like he was an interesting person!
