Maybe meetup? Portland and LA So before I blow my precious, precious MeTa post for the week, I'm asking here.[More:] Any interest in a Los Angeles meetup at the Grand Hallows Ball on July 20? I'll be there, waiting to get my hot, grubby hands on my copy of Harry Potter and the Imminent Doom for Someone, Anyway.

Also, I'll be in Portland from July 21 - July 27. I know this is right after the big Mefi bash (which, boo, can't be there for) but would anyone be interested in grabbing a few drinks one of those nights? And, if so, feel free to suggest a place and night (21st excluded; already have plans for then).
I'd be into drinking beers on any day but the 27th. What part of town are you staying in?

Staying at the Doubletree Portland on NE Multnomah. No clue where that is relative to everything else...

I'll have just moved into Portland, so I'd probably be up for joining! I'm so mad I'm missing the big bash by 3! days.

My new place is in NE too.

Count me in.

The Doubletree is on the other side of the river from downtown, but it's conveniently located near a half-dozen bus lines and the light rail. If we choose a downtown location, the Tugboat or Berbatis would be a good choice if it's a small group, like 10 people or less (and we get there early enough to grab an appropriately sized table). Maybe other residents have better ideas, particularly if it's a full-blown "MetaTalk and cameras and people talking about the internet" MetaFilter meetup.

Welcome to Portland, Sil!

Well, it's 7 blocks from where I live, if that helps.

Which it probably doesn't.

And it's not too far from some decent places to drink.

What kind of places do you prefer for drinking purposes? Swanky? Divey? Fratty? Hipstery?

Count me as a possibly maybe. There's always My Father's Place, since it's a straight shot down MLK, sorta. Or would that be too dank?

I love My father's place, but I'm a divebar kind of guy.

There's also Club 21 (Steaks for your enjoyment!) which is not far, and usually fairly empty with large tables...

I'm happy to go anywhere in Portland accessible by public transit from the Doubletree. For drinking purposes: someplace on the nicer side though not too pricey (freelancer here and I'm saving my budget for a trip to Powells). Hipstery, I guess, whatever the hell that means. A pub-type place would also do nicely. Someplace not too loud would be ideal; having to shout kills me. (I realize I'm not giving you much to go on, so grok that, honestly, I don't care much as long as it's full of Mefites.)

If it could reasonably be described as "quirky", I'm in.

I've never been to Club 21, but that sounds like it would be a good pick. The #10 bus should go right near there from the Doubletree IIRC.

Oh! So when I did a Boston Meetup, we ended up at a place with pool tables and beer and whatnot. It seemed like that was pretty well-enjoyed--you could play pool or go sit with a small group at the bar or on a couch in the corner. It was Big City in Allston, for those familiar with Boston. Any Portland analogues? Because that was fun.

My Father's Place

A word of warning to visitors from California, though: Portland bars are SMOKY....

Thanks, cmonkey! It's more of a welcome back - I grew up in Portland and in Salem, so I'm excited to be coming home as an adult.

Although now that I'm still packing my place desperately in 95 degree heat (no air conditioning at my house), I am wondering just what the hell I did, hehe.

We must savour the smoke before the boring bastards in the Oregon State Legislature do away with it for good in 2009.

I'm being good and completely quitting smoking (yes, even the social smoking and the smoking to soothe my nerves when shooting pool in tournaments), so there will be no more savoring for me.

Sigh.

I dunno about the 20th, but Millinare mentioned something about trivia on Tuesdays. Also, my girlfriend'll be out of town from Friday through Wednesday, so I'll be looking to do something (since I still only have intermittent internet at home, and will probably be spending most of my time reading books).
