I've always meant to go to MutantFest, but everyone I know who has gone has mentioned people playing techno music at all hours of the night and sweet jesus that would throw me into a murderous rage. Glad you had fun!
Sounds fun. Can't believe I've never heard of it. Did you play/spin/whatever? ≡ Click to see image ≡
Saw my friend Zemi17 DJ on Tuesday, I think you might like his stuff http://zemi17.net/ (go to reproductions page).
If you don't like techno and don't like soundsystems playing at all hours, you'd probably be pretty miserable, unless you really, really like hanging out with dirty weirdos, freaks and geeks. Most of them extremely intense and odd. All while practicing rather rugged zero-improvement leave-no-trace camping and extreme fire awareness and prevention.
Granted, it's car camping and easy-ish but I probably drank 20 gallons of water and hiked 20-30 miles. I have bruises on body parts I didn't know I had. I had to employ just about every camping skill I knew short of truly serious first aid and those truly dire survival skills like eating bugs and banging rocks together.
There's all kinds of music, but the focus is decidedly on free/broken/break/glitch/noise/techno. And the whole point is basically to see who can bring the biggest, loudest system out to the middle of nowhere and keep it running. Non stop. Which I think is awesome, fortunately. I could do that for months on end if people kept shipping in supplies and shipping out trash.
I love sleeping with music off in the distance. I had the craziest dreams the whole week. One of which was dreaming that I was running around the festival, doing festival and boy scout things and all that manic stuff. Waking up from that one was a son of a bitch, especially when I told our camp cook and said "Are you sure you're awake?" Owch.
Hellbient: Yeah, I got to play about 2-3 hours of random ambient and downtempo on the spaz/5lowershop system on sat. afternoon-eve. Which was sweet. One of the bigger systems I've ever played on for sure.
