Oakland celebrates Independence Day in brief:

1) 2,500 and 3,000 pounds of fireworks confiscated
2) 4 kilos of coke
3) "The only fire that caused major injuries...was initially attributed to fireworks but later was determined to be a methamphetamine lab..."

I'm surprised that there weren't more weapons arrests. Firing into the air was the dominant form of celebration when I was living there (1991 - 94).

I love Independence Day, where we celebrate our freedom to be arrested for celebrating in the traditional way, with fireworks.

It really was quite a party. Which I watched from my roof, access to which requires scary fire escape climb. Pretty huge fireworks coming out of backyards all over the place. Much carousing.

I was surprised to read Oakland had cancelled their official ones, because there was a HUGE display going on not far from where they usually do it.
