30 June 2007

My daughter is reading Cask of Amontillado to herself as a bedtime story. She's 12. I'm so proud. She told me she like vampire stories, you know, Goosebumps-type stuff, so I gave her the copy of Edgar Allan Poe stories my dad gave me on my 15th birthday. Oh, and yesterday she asked me if we could watch Blues Brothers together. What a kid, huh?
Let's wait and see just how proud of her you'll be when she tries to wall you up in a corner of your basement.

Awesome. :)

I was also an Edgar Allen Poe freak by my 15th birthday... he taught me the value of the short story, which later became my favorite form of fiction when I became a Flannery O'Connor fan.

So I told her what deadcowdan said, and she said "No, tell them I love you too much to do that, but nevermind what happened to all the babysitters."

Once she's 15 or so, see if you can find her a copy of The Dark Eye. It's not so much a game as a way to walk through some of Poe's stories, and Wm. Burroughs' narration bits are just as amazing as you might think they would be.

I think I read Poe when I was about 12 as well. Man, the ending just really sticks with you. "Yes, for the love of God." Sleep didn't come too easy after that. Naturally, it was absolutely necessary that I read "The Premature Burial" hot on the heels of that. Uh huh.
Sounds like your daughter's pretty all right.

*blink* babysitters. burial. premature. hmmm. she, ah, doesn't have a bloody great swinging scythe set up in the basement, does she?

On preview - The Dark Eye is available here at The Underdogs, and I recommend it highly. (Note: read the install notes, as it's not a standard process.)

Next up is "Tell-Tale Heart." When she read the line "My blood ran cold," she started singing J. Geils' "Centerfold."

Well, that'd sure suck the horror out of it fast, wouldn't it? Well, except for the horror that is J. Geils.

Psh. I read the Divine Comedy around that age. The whole thing. Also, I was a pompous ass.

I used to work at a summer camp where we had a tradition of reading books chapter by chapter to the campers after lights-out.

One time I read that story to the oldest boys' cabin, 12-14 years old. They listened spellbound. At the end of the story, there was a long contemplative silence. Then one kid said:

"That was so cool. ....What was that about?"
