E-mail From Iraq →[More:]My best friend is over in Iraq doing convoy duty and I just got my first e-mail from him since he started his tour. It had everything: blown-up bridges, his friends dying in front of him, idiotic commanders endangering their men "to save driving time" to Fallujah.
He wants to hear about my life, and what can I say? "Gee, I'm doing improv all summer for tourists?"
I feel completely pathetic and powerless in the face of what he's going through. My chest is tight from fear and absolute anger over what our nation has become or could still become with all this Mid-East nonsense.
He's worried his kids are growing up without him, and who can blame him? I remember when we were in our 20's and the only reason he enlisted at all was to get college money and "have a normal life in four years".
Well, he's been in for more like 20 now, and has to "push the lifeless body out of the jeep" and double-clutch through gunfire in 100+ degree heat "just in case the driver dies".
There aren't words, poeple. Peace.
