What a very odd article. I totally understand the "Buy American" principle, and would certainly agree with it as a regulation for army supplies, but... man, could they present it without all the xenophobia? Yikes.

The fact that people will get so fired up over symbolism always simultaneously makes me chuckle, and depresses me a little.

I actually had a warm-fuzzy symbolism moment this morning -- I can see the huge Pride Weekend pink triangle on Twin Peaks from my window. Though it did startle me for a second to see neon pink that high up.

I totally support the 'buy USA' concept in the sense of 'buy local' concept. Or as much local as you can. More environmentally friendly. Less prone to aid exploitation of third world workers. But it is true, occhiblu, I find myself siding with xenophobes and ultra-nationalists. Oh well.

That makes sense, carmina.

I hope they conducted the interviews for this article in the local Wal-Mart parking lot, just for added irony.

Actually, this story illustrates perfectly the current meaning of America as we know it today. All hat, no cattle.
