It says they have alot of experience creating spheres. Why would one need a perfect sphere? I'm just curious about the applications.

Looks really cool.

However, why? I'm not sure I understand at all the reasons behind this endeavor.

But again: cool.

The spheres will serve as the new global standard kilogram.

I'm not a scientist and I totally suck at math/physics, but here's my question: If the earth is always moving through space, rotating, slowing down in rotation (I'm assuming that's why seconds are added to clocks every few years)and changing in weight (pure speculation), how can there be a standard measurement of anything?

Isn't that where the atom count comes in? I thought the point was to create these perfect spheres, calculate the number of atoms, and then use the atom count as the official measurement.

Which I think is pretty wicked awesome. As scody said, it's SCIENCE!

[this is cool]

But then, science just for the sake of science is always cool.
