We found an apartment! Yay! [More:]So we spent all afternoon yesterday traipsing around the upper east side. Saw lots of fantastic places, but finally decided, that as it's only for one year, to go with cheap and a little small and dark versus expensive and sunny and large. So that's a weight off my mind and now I can actually like, work, and reply to emails and all that sort of stuff. Yay!
Excellent!

YAY! And it looks like you get to stay on the Upper East Side!

I guess the Dakota didn't have any vacancies currently.

Woot. This mean more parties?

Wow, that was fast. Congrats! I hope you use the $ you save on rent for wonderful things.

I think the Dakota is on the West side...isn't it?

Woo! Yay! Let me know when the housewarming is and I'll be there! After all, I'm (nearly) a native New Yorker now, I even told a cab driver to go fuck himself when he almost ran me over.

Wow, I'm impressed. I was already making up the sofa for you guys. Did you use an agent? Just curious... Congrats, in any case.

Cool, congrats! I hope the actual moving process isn't too painful, but at least you've got somewhere to live.

SHIT SHIT SHIT

NOT SO FAST, GASPODE

ok so i think we are being scammed? Or maybe I am just paranoid? We used a broker, to answer pips's question. but it was a dude recommended by the housing office at Steve's hospital, right? And the hospital does a deal with them so we don't have (much of) a broker's fee.

So we picked the place, the cheapest that he showed us. And our credit check and all that went through and we got it. Then just now he called up to say that there was a water problem (mains burst? something) at the place and the landlord was pulling it off. So he said we could take any other ones or he'd show us some more....yeah, they are all more expensive.

So I'm 85% feeling like we are being scammed right now. Thoughts?

Yes, I would also feel that way. If it helps. Which it doesn't.

:(

The scam would be that you are panicked and will settle for a not-as-good deal?

There must be someone at the hospital who deal with this broker. I would make sure to inform them of this.

Good (continued) luck.

Mmmm, that's not so good. Short of requesting (if possible) to see the problem, this does seem suspect. Does Googling the broker's details bring anything up? I hope it all works out for you.

Yeah, danf. That's about it. And also, he gets a bigger cut if we take a more expensive apartment. I suggested to mr. gaspode that he call the housing person at his hospital, but they weren't there, and now it's after 5. He called the city water place thingy and they hadn't had any reports.

gah, I don't know what to do! (just venting, no need to come up with ideas).

My first thought?

Bait and switch.

Exactly the words I used j_p.

HOWEVER there is a happy ending.

We got hold of the landlord and went over. There actually was a real true to life problem (sewage issues and yes it was easy to tell...)

Anyway, the upshot is, we got another place for the same price. We asked if they could do us a deal, and they dropped the rent on it. It may have been a ploy but... there really was a problem that there wasn't yesterday so I'm going to go with believing them, because being overly cynical tires me out.

So we have a place to live. Again. And it's nicer than the one we took yesterday. For the same price. So it's still a win.
