Robin Hood.

He's a Robbin' Hood.

Ghaaah. I'm an idiot. I never realized the word play and always wondered why his hood was never robin-red. Of course "hood" came to mean criminal/thief/etc after Robin, right?

Family Guy plays heavily on All In the Family. All I caught was the Family Guy intro homage to Those Were The Days.

It wasn't until a few days to leaving Russia when I realized that I didn't really need to walk all the way to the men's bathroom on the upper floor at night: I could have just as well used the one (women's) on my floor.

I just realized this past week that Paris Hilton was part of that Hilton family; I always thought she was just another self-made millionaire party girl, up from poverty on a farm in the deep South or from a Mexican silver mine or something, like our president.

In the original (Mary Martin) Peter Pan, it just recently dawned on me that Captain Hook and the father are played by the same actors.

In the same vein, it also only recently dawned on me that the Tinman, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion WERE expressing, respectively, heart, brains, and courage, even as they were going to the Wizard to ask for them.

Both of these things. . .I had no clue about most of my life.

Riffing off danf, I didn't realize until recently that the guy who played Bill Lumbergh in Office Space, Gary Cole, is the same actor who played Ricky Bobby's dad in Talledega Nights.
Yup, same guy.

Gay Cole was also Mike Brady in "The Brady Bunch Movie", the Evil Sheriff in "American Gothic", the Captain in the Babylon 5 spin-off "Crusade", Uncle Bill in the "Family Affair" revival that had Tim Curry as Mr. French, the late-night talk-show host in "Midnight Caller" (regrettably forgotten series from the 90s), the guy in the broadcast booth with Jason Bateman in "Dodgeball", Vice-President Bob in "The West Wing" and the voice of "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law". He's been in damn-near everything and half of his roles are iconic. Move over, Kevin Bacon, I'm counting Degrees of Gary Cole now.

Yeah, I remember John Hurt once saying something about one of the marks of a great actor is not being able to recognize him from role to role. Hurt certainly abides there, and I'd say it applies to Mr. Cole as well. It ain't all about you, Mr. Cruise!

That's two of the greatest supporting roles ever.

danf, I don't think he was intentionally taking away from stars, I think he was speaking from a personal level as opposed to making a sweeping generalization for all actors. Hurt really takes that to a literal level, really disguises himself well.
The idea being perhaps that a star shouldn't make you say "Oh, it's Humphrey Bogart" but rather "Oh, it's Rick Blaine" (unless of course you're watching The African Queen).

Yeah I know. I was not trying to argue with you. There are a number of actors who disappear into roles so well. Hurt is a great example. I would submit Parker Posey's name on the female side.
