My first idea when I saw that kind of statistics was:

"Let's poke a hole in the middle of that island and fill it with water! Then throw some dirt in the middle of the hole. Rinse, Repeat"

I actually know a couple of people who were born and raised on Manitoulin Island.

Whoa. Firefox didn't choke at that spelling. They must have Canucks working for them.

good. iconomy's comment makes me no longer frightened for myself that 'hasselhofian recursion' was the first thing that leapt to mind upon reading that metafilter post.

Manitoulin is truly a wonderful place. Jen and I honeymooned there, in Providence Bay, in a tent. It's a beautiful, beautiful place.

Yay Manitoulin!
