Holy ****, holy ****, holy ****... Never look at the Tarot when making a critical decision. Hope me, MeCha. [More:]

I'm not really superstitious, but I need to give a final answer today on giving two weeks notice at my job, and I looked at an online Tarot reading just for kicks.

Here are some of the things I got in my reading (including the #1 worst card, the Tower, which signifies disaster):

Unexpected events. Disruption. Bankruptcy. Termination. Havoc. Downfall. Undoing. Loss of stability. A sudden even that destroys trust. Loss of money. Loss of security. Loss of love and affection. Setback. Terrible change. Unforeseen accident.

(Change): Difficulty in launching new projects. Difficult situations arising. New troubles. Embarrassment. Worry. Concern.

(Defeat): Conquest. Defeat. Destruction of others. Degradation. Adversaries may arise. Revocation. Infamy. Dishonor.

Rejection, loneliness, and the need for comfort. May suggest unemployment, a catastrophe in personal finance, or a turn for the worse in business.

Ghaaaaah. I should never look at these things.

Hope me, MeCha. Give me just one poignant word. It's cushy and pays well and I have my own office, but I need to quit this job. It's destroying my lungs and brain cells.

There's your answer.

You know it's completely random and doesn't mean a thing, you silly. I don't know what you do but it does seem rather soul-crushing, based on past comments you've made, Shane.

An online reading is by definition going to be shallow and superficial. And anyway, Tarot doesn't predict the future, it's just there to make you think about your situation.

Either ignore it, or think of it as being your fears about making change- something you have to overcome.

LOL. Thanks, Mike and Joanne and BP.

"Soul-crushing," LOL:

My current position makes my resume look nice and I'm getting quite a few calls.

But that damn Tarot reading and my history of bad luck...

What Cabana Boy said, shane. Also? My tarot said your tarot is wrong.

ps. I know I owe you e-mail. Crazy week. Will write you Sunday. In the meantime, you may dream of lolcats.

'Taint even a real reading, without cards present. They're just pulling your leg.

I just wanted to start a sentence with the word "taint," really.

Tarot schmarot!

Try the i Ching!

But seriously. What mike said - you have all the reasons you need to change jobs. Life's too short - if the reasons for keeping the job are weak but the reasons for wanting to do something else are strong, then uncrush your soul and move on.

Hey, you know, Conan the Barbarian did the same thing with the bills in a "What If?" comic book (What if Conan was transported to late 20th century Warriors-style New York?). On his way to becoming a pimp, drug-lord, gang leader, and museum-jewel thief, Conan mugs dozens, at first throwing away the "paper wrappings" and keeping the valuable coins of his victims. He calls his main rival gang-leader a Kushite before they fight. I liked that.

I was going to say, like Miko, I ching.

So do Conan's coins.

Maybe I'm in the minority in the mefi metaverse, but I do occasionally find Tarot readings useful and insightful. But that's with real cards and possibly an experienced reader and much time to carefully meditate on the archetypal resonances of each card. No card is good or bad in and of itself; each has multiple possible trajectories of meaning and implication. When presented with all of these possibilities in the space of a reading, your subconscious has an opportunity to weave them together into a narrative that may or may not reflect some underlying patterns in your life.

Any reading/reader/online automated script that says "this reading/card means x, and nothing but x" is just playing parlor games.

But if you really must read some connection between your current state of affairs and the online reading, maybe this -- the reading is merely reflecting your fears, which are very strong and active right now.

And sorry to keep rambling on, but you mentioned the tower represents disaster. It's really not that simple, IMO -- one could also say it represents an upsetting of an oppressive order or institution (whether in the self or one's life), a clearing-the-way for something better to come along.

I agree with treepour (though I don't have his knowledge of the tarot). I think tarot readings can be really helpful, but in the sense that they help you think about and structure what's going on in your head, not in the sense that they somehow predict the future.

You're thinking about quitting your job. Of *course* you're worried about money and change and a loss of stability -- those are things pretty inherent in quitting your job. Take the tarot reading as the universe saying, "Hey, let's make sure we're being realistic here," as a way of reminding you to get your ducks in a row as much as you can. Then move ahead and do what's right for you and your life.

I don't understand the I Ching thing. I think I'm only equipped to understand horoscopes.

i read tarot from time to time and have my own decks.

as an addenda to what treepour said, one of the ways i've been taught to think of the tower card (as an example, in specific) is the analogy of 'castles built on the sand'.

in the 'journey of the fool', the tower represents a breaking down of misconceptions and a clearing away of false / unstable foundations.

so, it can be a positive, not just a disaster. oh sure it may *look* like a disaster when the lightning strikes and the sandcastle collapses in the waves. but in reality it's merely a signifier for Big Changes.

i hope this helps. and yea, i'm with the others in saying that online readings are pretty much useless.

if it helps, i try to think of the cards as focal points for what i should meditate on whilst making decisions, not as black-and-white prognosticators.

I like using the I Ching, in the way occhiblu describes. Sometimes reading the interpretation and watching your own reaction is all the enlightenment you need. It seems to me that most of the tools of divination are effective at helping you think, which is probably why they've lasted so long, despite their aura of mumbo-jumbo.

I'm confused. Last I knew you had a warehouse-type job that you loved. Assuming I'm not confusing you with someone else, what happened? Did I miss a post or twelve?

If this is too nosy, my apologies and please ignore me.
