I just now almost ate a ladybug. [More:]Since we're completely organic, I don't usually bother washing my home-grown salad greens very thoroughly--just enough to get the dirt off. As I finished my salad just now, I saw something odd, and saw that it was a bleu-cheese-dressing-drenched ladybug. I wonder how many I didn't see.

So what's the weirdest thing you've ever found in your food?
The weirdest? Or the grossest?

When I was in high school, I was getting ready for school one morning and grabbed a granola bar out of the pantry. Took a bite of it while I was getting dressed. Tasted awful, so I spat it out. Looked down at the granola bar and it was positively crawling with weevils.

For future reference: Weevils taste yucky.

A huge, really rusty staple. Like, industrial size. It was in an eggroll. The place went out of business shortly thereafter, although I had nothing to do with it, swear.

A few years ago, I tried the Atkins diet, and got all sorts of meaty treats for snacks. Most do fine with no refrigeration, but one (Buffalo Bites) clearly says to refrigerate after opening. I, however, did not see that instruction until it was too late--I had an open bag that'd been sitting in a desk drawer for a month or so, and I was happily munching away, until I noticed that every piece was covered with white mold. Is mold a carb?

A live earwig crawling around my ravioli. We didn't have to pay for drinks that night.

A small lego was pretty odd to find. (I suspect my then two-year-old brother had something to do with this.)

The grossest was very long, slim, slowly writhing white worm that looked EXACTLY like the alfalfa sprouts it was roaming around in. It was unbelievably disgusting.

I WILL NOT READ THIS THREAD.

not one but two slugs in a salad at a very fancy restaurant.

Maybe they were escaping from death by escargot, who knows?

It's springtime ... meaning very soon I will be reminded that formic acid has a very distinct flavor, as little ants will find their way into my cereal cupboard any day now.

Come to think of it, the flavor is a bit like a 9v battery.

I'm so hungry I'd kill for a ladybug right about now.

For real? I contain too much caffine and nicotene for the FDA to certify me.

Q: What's worse than finding a worm in your apple?

A: The holocost.

I found a big chunk of jagged metal in my spinach pie a few months ago. By "found" I mean that I bit down on it and then was immediately grateful that I didn't actually swallow it. I haven't been able to bring myself to get anything from that restaurant since then. Chew carefully, Portlanders who eat at Nicolas lebanese restaurant.

Lots and lots of ants. In the peanut butter. Followed by my screaming and running around.

At initial very quick glance, I thought there was just a bit of grape jelly from a previous knife. Closer inspection revealed the jelly was in fact all over the inside of the jar. And moving.

There are some things I miss about North Carolina, but the hot buggy summers is not one of them. I also ran across several large rodents, snakes, and a female Black Widow (that was on the day I moved in to my place there).

I bit into a toothpick remnant in a turkey club sandwich at Harris Ranch on the I-5 in Coalinga, California. I had already removed my toothpick from that portion of the sandwich and was quite surprised to find a sharp piece of wood imbedded into my hard palate. It only bled a little and manager was very solicitious. We ate free that day. But I haven't ordered a turkey club since.

Don't feel too bad. I'm sure it won't get away next time.

That's a bummer! I love(d?) that place.

Shit! Me too! Well, never mind, I've found a very acceptible substitute.

I was once talking to someone through a screen door, and a fly flew right in my mouth. By reflex, I swallowed it. Tasted like chicken.

I was lunching at an Orange Julius with a friend years ago. While listening to her, I wasn't looking at what I was eating. I did look down, and noticed I was halfway through a moldy hotdog bun. They offered me a replacement, but I declined. Seems I'd lost my appetite by then.
